London & North Eastern Railway 4-6-0 No. 8572 (61572)Posted by: Russell Newman on May 20, 2025 @ 06:05:07
The overhaul and rebuild on the ex LNER B12 4-6-0 No. 8572, has now started to pick up at Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. Work on the B12 had been delayed slightly while Riley & Son Engineering had moved into their new and larger premises in Bury. The chassis and bogie of the locomotive have now been positioned on levelling blocks ready for work to recommence which includes replacement expansion link and motion bracket plate and fitting of replacement tyres. Meanwhile in the boiler shop at Weybourne on the North Norfolk Railway, work is progressing on the boiler, which is being carried out in-house which has progressed with the replacement of mudhole doors plate sections on each side of the outer firebox. Detailed technical discussions by members of the M&GN Joint Railway Society have led to the decision to replace the entire front barrel section and throat plate with a new welded longitudinal seam barrel section. This will replace the bottom 1/3 which was found to be significantly wasted and pitted together with the remaining section which exhibited some moderate pitting. Replacing both those sections now will eliminate the need for timely and complicated welding and give that part of the boiler an extended life expectancy. Additional boiler work will include replacement of the throatplate rather than undertake repair work then originally planned and replacement of the fire hole. Both of these will need to be formed off site by a specialist contractor once the costs are agreed.
