Ji Tong Railway 2-10-2 No. QJ 7081Posted by: Russell Newman on Jul 10, 2022 @ 10:07:26
This is the history and details of ex China Rail and Jitong Railway QJ Class 2-10-2 7081. 7081 was built in 1986 at the famous Datong Locomotive Works in North, East, China and was one of the later members of the Class built there in the late 1980s. She worked on China Rail’s Shenyang Bureau round the Jilin Area from new in 1986 to 1991 and then round Da’anbei Area, which was the last steam shed on China Rail at the very end of mainline steam in China in 2002 as 7081 was one of the last QJ locomotives working on China Rail. From 2002 7081 was transferred to the Jitong Railway in Inner Mongolia, North, East, China and was among 120 QJ steam locomotives hauling heavy freight trains through the legendry Jingpeng Pass which was known as the last great steam show on the planet that was 100% steam worked from 1995 to 2005. By the end of 2005 the Jitong Railway was dieselised, 7081 was among the last 20 steam locomotives operating between Daban to Chabuga right to the very end of steam. On the 7th of December 2005, 7081 hauled the very last mainline steam hauled passenger train in China from Daban to Chabuga and back. In 2006 following the end of steam on the Jitong Railway 7081 and four other QJ’s were moved from Daban Depot on the Jitong Railway to the Jinzhou 701 locomotive works near Nanpiao in Liaoning, China as they had been bought by the Railroad Development Corporation for export and preservation in the United States of America. 7081 along with sister QJ 6988 were taken into the ownership of Henry Posner III who is the head of the Railroad Development Corporation, for special operations on the Iowa Interstate Railroad which is the former Rock Island Railroad’s mainline from Council Bluffs in Iowa to into Illinois. Following overhaul to American standards and testing at Jinzhou 701 works 7081 and 6988 where moved to China’s Port Dalian for shippment to the United States of America and in September 2006 7081 and 6988 made their public debut on American Tracks for the first time. Since then both 7081 and 6988 have operated from their base at Newton, Iowa where they have been used on special passenger operations to help fund local emergency services and local festivals along the Iowa Interstate Railroad’s mainline. 7081 is currently the only QJ in the USA kept in orginal Chinses condition and livery apart from the fitment of a American Chime Whistle along side her Chinese Whistle which was added in 2010. Occasionally both 7081 and 6988 have also hauled freight trains along the Iowa Interstate Railroad as well as in 2011 prior to Train Fest being held in Rock Island 7081 and 6988 hauled a 7200 ton freight train from Iowa City to Rock Island which was a world record for steam haulage. 7081 continued operating until 2013 as she is now in need for her 1472-day Overhaul. Since 2014 7081 along with 6988 are now in the care of the Central States Steam Preservation Association who operate both QJ’s on the Iowa Interstate Railroad and around the United States of America. It is planned to move 7081 to join her sister at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis, Illinois for her planned 1472-day Overhaul there, when it will happen is unknown? But 7081 will be one of only three QJ 2-10-2 steam locomotives that will be operational outside of China in the years ahead.

Ji Tong Railway 2-10-2 No. QJ 6988Posted by: Russell Newman on Jul 10, 2022 @ 06:07:11
This is the history and detial of former China Rail and Jitong Railway QJ Class 2-10-2 No. 6988 which is one of three QJ Class 2-10-2s preserved in the United States of America and the only ones that are operational outside of China. 6988 was built in 1985 at China’s famous Datong locomotive works in North, East China. She worked mainly round the Changchun Area on China Rail’s Shenyang Bureau until the mid 1990s. By 1996 6988 was transferred to the Jitong Railway in Inner Mongolia and was among 120 QJ’s hauling heavy freight trains through the legendry Jingpeng Pass which was known as the last great steam show on the planet. By the end of 2005 steam came to a end on the Jitong Railway which by then 6988 was among last 20 steam locomotives still working then and on the 8th of December 2005 6988 along with sister QJ 7030 (which has survived on display at Daban Depot) hauled what was to be the very last double headed steam hauled mainline freight train in China from Daban to Chabuga and back. In 2006 following the end of steam on the Jitong Railway 6988 was moved from Daban Depot along with four other QJ’s to the Jinzhou 701 locomotive works near Nanpiao in Liaoning, China as she was she was set aside for a new life in the United States of America. 6988 along with sister QJ 7081 where bought by Henry Posner III head of the Railroad Develment Corporation for special use on the Iowa Interstate Railroad which is the former Rock Island Railroad mainline from Council Bluffs in Iowa into Illinois. After being overhauled to American standards and testing at Jinzhou 6988 along with 7081 were moved to China’s Shipping Port at Dalian for shipment to the USA. In September 2006 6988 and 7081 made their debut in the United States of America and since then both QJ’s have been used on special passenger operations along the Iowa Interstate Railroad to help fund local emergency services and during local festivals along the Iowa Interstate mainline. In 2011 6988 was Americanized which saw a change of appearance to the locomotive as the skyline casing around the chimney was removed and a American style headlight with a brass number plate fitted and a American Steam locomotive bell mounted on top of the smokebox door along with a American Chime Whistle added along side her Chinese Whistle and black paint on the cowcater, driving wheels and tender underframe and even the Datong builders plate. This was done prior to Train Fest being held in Rock Island that year which on the way to it 6988 and 7081 hauled a record brecking 7200 ton freight train from Iowa City to Rock Island which was a world record for a steam hauled freight in the 21st Century. Since 2014 6988 has been now under the care of the Central States Steam Preservation who operate the locomotive on the Iowa Interstate Railroad and other parts on the United States of America and is currently undergoing her 1472-day Overhaul at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America shops at Silvis, Illinois for more use again as one of a few QJ 2-10-2s left operational outside of China.

CR 2-10-2 No. QJ 7049Posted by: Russell Newman on Jul 10, 2022 @ 05:07:58
QJ 7049 is one of 14 QJ Class 2-10-2 locomotives that are still at Daban Depot on display as a reminder of what was the last great steam show on the planet. The QJ Class 2-10-2 is a icon for steam locomotives of China and was introduced in 1956. It was based on Russia’s FD Class 2-10-2s of the 1930s and their later LV Class 2-10-2s of the 1940s. Over 4714 QJ’s were built between 1956 right to 1988 as they where the last big modern mainline steam locomotives to be built in greater number in the world. The QJ’s were built at a number of locomotive works across China at places like Dalian, Tangshan, Shenyang, Mudanjiang, Changchun and the famous Datong works in North East, China which was where most of the them where built and the very last ones were built in 1988. The QJ Class was China’s heavy freight locomotive but they were also used on passenger trains as well as many QJ’s worked of China’s long distanced express trains and overnight sleeper trains with a top speed of 50mph. Their Boiler Pressure is rated at 14.7 bar / 213 psi along with Grate Area of 6.8 sq m with Total Heating Surface of 263 sq m with Superheater Area at 141 sq m. Their Driving Wheel Diameter is at 1500 mm with two outside cyliners with a Cylinders, Diameter/Stroke at 650 mm x 800 mm with Walschaerts Valve Gear. Their Tractive Effort is at 282 kN and they Overall Weight is 220 / 25300 tons and their Overall Length is 26.0 / 29.200 m and could carry up to 15 to 2200 tons of coal and 11000 gallons of water. Steam lasted on China Rail mainlines until 2002 as like all places around the world steam could not last forever but a 120 QJ locomotives where put to futher use on the Jitong Railway in Inner Mongolia, North East, China which was only built and open in 1995 and was 100% steam worked as this was where the QJ Class was best remembered working in pairs hauling heavy freight trains through the legendry Jingpeng Pass which was well known as the last great steam show on the planet from 1995 to 2005. Sadly in December 2005 the Jitong Railway was fully dieselised and the last 20 QJ steam locomotives where taken out of service. Sadly today their are no more QJ’s at work in China anymore as the last of them where taken out of service in 2010 but many have been preserved across and outside of China. QJ 7049 is one of 14 QJ Steam locomotives still at the Jitong Railway’s main depot at Daban on static display as a reminder of the last great steam show on the planet.
