The locomotive entered service with the then DRB as No. 52 1514 and in late 1945 was stored by the SBZ Military Administration until 1949 when adopted by the newly created DR in the same identity. It was reconstructed as a Rekolok at Raw Stendal, emerging as No. 52 8171-2. It worked until 1993, well into DB days and was withdrawn, officially, from Bw Leipzig Hbf Süd (but probably still outstationed at Bw Altenburg) and was purchased privately the following year for Staßfurt. in 1998 it went to the Hirzbergbahn for display at Tambach-Dietharz and was here in 2007.

Eisenbahn in Lohmuhlenmuseum had a single Br52 in their display at Lohmuhle in Tambach, south of Gotha in September 2003. It was well presefved, but non-operational. The history of the lok is confused. Some reports that it was withdrawn to store from Bw Leipzig Hbf Sud as late as 3/95. It was at sold to Herr Vedder July 1994 but without a tender and sited at Stassfurt before coming to Tambach.
