Ellis & Everard, Bardon Hill Quarries 0-4-0VBT No. NonePosted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 24, 2018 @ 12:10:13
Originally built in 1865 as an 0-4-0ST by the Coalbrookdale Company Ironworks becoming their number 6. In 1925 was rebuilt by Sentinel Limited in Shrewsbury, becoming a vertical boiler geared locomotive. The original chassis was used. Even the sand boxes still have the Coalbrookdale builders plate. After the rebuild it returned to work at the Coalbrookdale Ironworks. Probably out of use by 1950. Now stored under an arch of a viaduct. Next to the car park at Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, just a 5 minutes walk from its unrebuilt sister loco number 5 in the Enginuity museum.

Allied Ironfounders 0-4-0VBT No. NonePosted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 24, 2018 @ 11:10:15
Originally built by Manning Wardle works number 437 in 1873. Was a 0-4-0ST supplied to Gaskell, Decon & Co, Widnes becoming their number 2 loco. Gaskell, Decon & Co was a company pioneering new methods of producing hydrochloric acid with cheaper by-products of chlorine, soda & bleaching powder. May have worked there until the business closed in 1919.

In 1925 it was rebuilt by Sentinel Limited in Shrewsbury becoming a vertical boiler geared locomotive. Then it was used at the Coalbrookdale Ironworks until rail traffic ceased at the works in 1960. Has passed into preservation but nothing seems to have been done to the loco. Now stored under an arch of a viaduct next to the car park at Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron.

Lunt Combey & Pitt 0-6-0ST No. 'Winston Churchill'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 23, 2018 @ 16:10:46
Ordered by Cadbury Brothers to work at their Blackpole, Worcestershire factory. Arrived in 1923 and numbered 7. Later transferred to their factory at Bourneville. Found unsuitable due to the many tight curves. Normally only 0-4-0 locos had operated there. Quickly returned to Blackpole. When replaced by diesel loco it was sold in 1946 to Robert Stephensons Hawthorn Ltd. and overhauled at their Darlington workshops. Sold to Lunt, Comley & Pitt Ltd. Used at their recently opened Pensett Trading Estate, Brierley Hill, a coal concentration depot supplying coal & coke to local industries and domestic users. After withdrawal loaned for display to Dudley Corporation in 1970. Now displayed in the car park of the Black Country Museum.

In 1865 the Coalbrookdale Company Ironworks built six 0-4-0ST standard gauge locomotives, keeping two to work their ironworks which they numbered 5 & 6. Their number 5 worked into the 1930s. When it was sold for scrap. The buyers hired it out as a working loco to the Netherseal Colliery in Derbyshire. Later it went to Bardon Hill Quarries, Leicestershire. Still in use in the mid 1940s, until abandoned in the open. In 1959 moved to Coalbrookdale for preservation. Now displayed inside the Enginuity building, one of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums

Built in 1901 for Bass Brewery to work at their railway in Burton-upon Trent, becoming their number 9. Worked until 1964. Has been preserved now on display at the National Brewery Visitors Centre. There is plenty to see at this museum. The model of the brewery & railways is worth seeing, plus a good range of brewery vehicles. Behind 5907 is a carriage which was used over the years to take VIP visitors around the extensive brewery railways.

In 1946 the streamlining was removed to improve maintenance, the first of the class to be altered. Became British Railways 46235 in 1948. Withdrawn in 1964. Was displayed at Birmingham Museum of Science & Industry. Moved on a short length of track operated, I believe by compressed air. This museum closed and loco moved across Birmingham. Now in the Thinktank, Birmingham's new science museum, a museum built to mainly interest & educate children. Still plenty to see for adults. A good selection of exhibits.

Asiatic Petroleum Company 2-6-0 No. 2Posted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 21, 2018 @ 14:10:46
An unidentified 2-6-0. I can find no history on this locomotive. In the late 1970s it was an operating steam locomotive at the Caracas Museo Transporte. Appears to be 24 inch gauge and is oil fired. It was painted as Shell number 2 and had CDC on the cab side. CDC was Colon Development Company, another of Shells companies in the Maracibo area. Maybe used on the 24 inch gauge 11 mile railway owned by Shell. The Ferrocarril San Lorenzo - Mene Grande from their refinery to the oil field.

Now operates tourist trains at a Rum distillery outside of Caracas. Appears to use the same carriages from the Museo Transporte. The railway full title is Hacienda Santa Teresa, El Consejo, Estado Atagua. Runs from a station building named El Consejo on the distillery estate. The original El Consejo station was 50 miles away from Caracas. So not sure if the old station building has moved here or more likely a replica has been built.

Shell San Lorenzo Refinery 0-4-0T No. UnknownPosted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 21, 2018 @ 14:10:03
This Bell built geared steam locomotive is the only known existing geared steam loco built by Bell. The Bell Locomotive Works, New York made oil fired geared steam locomotives. Their claim was they could burn any cheap oil, so cheap to run and no spark or ash was produced making them safe for use in forests, oil refineries etc. Not fireless but much safer than coal or wood fired. This loco was used at Shells Petroleum refinery in Venezuela. The CPC on the loco tanks is for Caribbean Petroleum Company, acquired by Shell in 1912. CPC built a refinery in 1917 at San Lorenzo. This processed oil from the Mene Grande field becoming the first refinery to export oil from Venezuela

Gran Ferrocarril de Venezuela 4-4-4T No. 820 'HALCON'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 21, 2018 @ 14:10:35
One of the original steam locomotives to operate on this railway. After withdrawal it became the operating steam loco on the Ferrocarril Historico El Encanto, a 4 mile tourist railway operating from Los Lagos to El Encanto. This railway closed in 1998. 820 seems to have been having an overhaul when the railway closed. Metal thieves have damaged the loco beyond repair. The loco was removed at an unknown date. The remains were cleaned up and heavily painted. Now displayed at the Hacienda Santa Teresa near Caracas. Gran Ferrocarril de Venezuela opened in 1894. Ran 110 miles from Caracas to Valencia with 24 stations. Fully closed by 1966. Newspapers say the government is attempting to reopen the FC Historico El Encanto. Even though a lot of the infrastructure has been stolen.

Ferrocarril de Tachira 0-6-0ST No. Posted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 21, 2018 @ 14:10:15
The build date for this locomotive is earlier than 1939. On the smokebox is a builders plate. This says Baldwin Locomotive extra order 153 built 1939. Baldwin Locomotive after sales service supplied every part needed to keep the locomotives operating. These were called extra orders. Everything from fire bricks, gauges. pipes etc. When a large piece of equipment had to be built, items like a new boiler would be given a new builders plate. Which clearly stated it was an extra order. Plus the date this extra item was built, so the plate refers to the boiler, not the locomotive.

Ferrocarril de La Guaira Caracas was a railway built to connect the city of Caracas to its port of La Guaira. Even though only 7 miles from the sea, Caracas is at an altitude of 3,000 feet so a 23 mile railway had to be built. 8 steam locos supplied by Nasmyth Wilson & Co. allowed the railway to start operations in 1883. Once the line was operating a further 4 locos came from Beyer Peacock. Then a final order in 1890 with six locos from Nasmyth Wilson & Co. Number 15 being from this group. There were 9 stations on the line. The line was electrified in 1928. Passengers stopped being conveyed in 1946. Railway closed in 1951.

Ferrocarril de Bolivar 0-6-4T No. 8Posted by: Robin R Beck on Oct 21, 2018 @ 14:10:41
Ferrocarril de Bolivar was the first operating railway in Venezuela (2 others had failed). Built to 24 inch gauge, it originally ran 65 miles from the copper mines at Aroa to the port of Tucacas. Called Ferrocarril de Bolivar after Simon Bolivar, whose family had owned the mines until he sold them to help with the revolution. Railway opened 1877. Later extended another 55 miles from La Hacha to Barquisimeto, fully opened in 1891, the 9 miles railway from La Hacha to Aroa copper mine becoming a branch line. Railway had 22 stations. As well as copper it carried agriculture produce, mainly coffee & bananas. Carried more freight when thevainy season made the roads impassable. Like all Venezuelas railway, better roads took away the people & goods. All this railway closed by 1960

Central Pasto Viejo number 8 LUISA was new to sugar railway of Central Pasto Viejo of Puerto Rico. Built to 30 inch gauge. Within a year regauged to 1000mm and moved to Central Juncos railway. In 1939 was converted to burn oil. Operated on other Puerto Rican sugar railways. Still carried number 8 until renumbered to E462 when C. Brewer de PR sugar company took ownership. In 1968 purchased by an private individual. Received name LUISA (owners wifes name). From 1971 operating on the FC Historic de PR in Fajardo. When this railway closed in 1975 was probably the last operating steam loco in Puerto Rico. Moved to the Museo de Transporte in Caracas, Venezuela. The Ferrocarril Historic de PR was a tourist railway. Using a 4.6 mile branch of the Central Juncos sugar mill railway. Ran very successful steam hauled passenger trains for a few years. Only on Sunday in the cane harvest time (January to June). Three days a week rest of year. The railway also had 2 steam locos being overhauled for operation plus 5 donated steam locos for display only. The decline in sugar production saw many branch lines close. In 1975 a very destructive hurricane (Eloisa) caused so much damage this branch was not worth rebuilding so the tourist railway had to close.
