JNR 2-8-0 No. 29622 (Displayed as 59609)Posted by: Yuki Taki on Jul 23, 2024 @ 22:07:13
59609 in Mikasa and 29622 in Niigata are believed to have had their identities mixed up when sitting together in the bone yard at Otaru Chikkou Depot awaiting disposal in 1975-76. Both locomotives were retired from Iwamizawa Daiichi depot in 1975, and presumably dragged to Otaru with their plates removed, hence the mix-up. Photographs exist of the two locomotives sitting coupled together with the wrong numbers for each locomotive painted on their smokebox fronts. The locomotive preserved in Mikasa wearing 59609 is actually 29622, and the locomotive in Niigata is believed to be 59609.

JNR 2-8-2 No. D52-235 (Possibly D52-138 displayed as D52-235)Posted by: Yuki Taki on Jul 23, 2024 @ 22:07:33
Yet another JNR numbers mix-up, D52-235 is believed to be D52-138. The preserved locomotive does not have the all-weather cab that D52-235 was retrofitted with in 1961, and multiple parts have been found with their stamped numbers for D52-138 stamped over with D52-235.

JNR 4-6-2 No. C55-46 (Displayed as C55-53)Posted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on Jul 23, 2024 @ 16:07:17

London Midland & Scottish Railway 4-6-0 No. 45163 (5163)Posted by: Russell Newman on Jul 23, 2024 @ 06:07:14
The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, (known as the "Highland Hiker" is to return to the mainline following a deal with a partership with its owners the 45163 Ltd and Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. owners of ex LMS Black Five’s No. 45407 “The Lancashire Fusilier” and 44871 along with No. 45212 on loan to them from the the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The partnership will see No. 45163 leave the Colne Valley Railway and be relocated to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. at Heywood in Lancashire, where its restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition will be completed to mainline standards which will see the fitment of air-braking and main line electronic equipment – in return for the long-term loan of the locomotive to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. The hire agreement will run for 25 years, and will then end with the return of the locomotive to the 45163 Ltd in working order. Provision has also been made for it to visit other preserved railways around the UK, including the Colne Valley Railway and the West Somerset Railway. It is hope the work will be completed by 2027 which will see No. 45163 working on Network Rail metals on railtours and could even see it working the Jacobite Trains on the West Highland Line in Scotland.

JNR 4-6-2 No. C55-50Posted by: Yuki Taki on Jul 22, 2024 @ 19:07:50
C55-50 is another case of Class C55 numbers getting mixed up, though the mistake has since been reversed. When originally displayed at Otaru, the locomotive wore the plate for C55-30. This is significant because C55-30 belongs to the second batch of C55 which was originally streamlined, and differed somewhat in detail from the preserved C55-50 which belongs to the third and final batch of C55.

JNR 4-6-2 No. C55-46 (Displayed as C55-53)Posted by: Yuki Taki on Jul 22, 2024 @ 19:07:53
This locomotive is believed to be C55-46 wearing the number plate of C55-53. For whatever reason, JNR class C55 and their Taiwanese brothers have had a history of getting their numbers mixed up in preservation.

Nepal Government Railway 0-6-2T No. 3 'Gorakhnath'Posted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on Jul 22, 2024 @ 13:07:10
I recently viewed a YouTube video showing the locos with commentary in a language I couldn't understand, but this recent video showed them as derelict. The man who made the video was obviously interested in them, focussing on works plates where they were present and name plates. Maybe there is enough interest in South Asia to prompt preservation, who knows?

TRA (Tokyo-Yokohama Railway) 2-4-0T No. 9Posted by: Mark Smithers on Jul 22, 2024 @ 13:07:50

JNR 2-6-2T No. C12-38Posted by: Yuki Taki on Jul 22, 2024 @ 02:07:34
Small correction. The location is Tokai Kikan rather than Oigawa Railway. Status should be stored, as the locomotive is no longer publicly accessible. According to local sources, the locomotive will NOT be restored to operation nor be parted out for Oigawa Railway operations.

Cronton Colliery 0-6-0ST No. NonePosted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on Jul 21, 2024 @ 13:07:29
The previous note prompted me to investigate. I found that the details we had about location of the loco were well out of date. Research suggests the current location that we now show. The status is unchanged, although the loco appears to be dismantled.

The construction work of New-build LMS Patriot 4-6-0 No. 5551 "The Unknown Warrior", has started to pick up as the frames were moved inside the works at Tyseley Locomotive Works. The move was made on the 17th of July 2024 after being outside under tarpaulin since they arrived from Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust West shed at the Midland Railway - Butterley, in December 2023. This was needed as there was a wait for space inside at Tyseley, with volunteers working on preparatory work for the components that were delivered separately in March. The first package of work will be the reassembly of the horn guides, with the outside cylinders and wheelsets now at Riley & Son Engineering. The wheelsets are due back later in 2024 and will allow the frames to be re-wheeled once again.
