British Railways (Southern Railway) 4-6-2 No. 34010 (21C110) 'Sidmouth'Posted by: Russell Newman on May 9, 2025 @ 14:05:39
The ex Southern Railway Rebuilt Bulleid West Country Class Light Pacific No. 34010 "Sidmouth", is to return to mainline as Southern Locomotives Ltd are now restoring the locomotive to mainline standards. The decision has been made so that "Sidmouth" can replace No. 34028 "Eddystone" when its boiler and mainline ticket expires. With this decision, the team at Sellindge has been preparing the locomotive’s frames for an official examination, which includes testing the thickness of vulnerable areas, performing ultrasonic tests on the welding, and confirming the integrity of the frames. All the work that takes place will be documented so that the staff at Herston Works next to the Swanage Railway have a record of the work that takes place at Sellindge. There is currently no space at Herston Works, whilst work takes place on BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T 80104, which will soon arrive for final completion of its overhaul, so staff are continuing with work on No. 34010 at Sellindge. Meanwhile at Tyseley Locomotive Works, work has begun de-rusting and painting the boiler silver to smarten it up in preparation for Tyseley Locomotive Works to begin its overhaul. This boiler ran with No. 34053 "Sir Keith Park" ("303 Squadron"), but will now be used on No. 34010 "Sidmouth", and the job list on the boiler will be known after a full inspection.
