Location should also be changed to Nemuroshibetsu Station, Shibetsu, Hokkaido, Japan Equipped with an electric motor hidden between the frames driving the first coupled axle via chain and sprocket. The motorization was done in 2017 alongside its relocation to the former Nemuroshibetsu station, where the turntable that had long sat dormant has been restored to working order. British Railways 2-10-0 No. 92240Posted by: Russell Newman on May 1, 2025 @ 06:05:01
This is the history and insite of BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No. 92240, which is one of the few Crewe built 9F’s in preservation. No. 92240 was built in 1958 out of 198 9F’s built at Crewe between 1954 to 1958, and was among the last batch built there in October 1958. No. 92240 spent most of its short working life hauling freight on the Western Region of British Railways, being shedded at Ebbw Junction and Old Oak Common from 1958 and finally Southall in West London from 1960 where it was withdrawn from service in August 1965 after a short working life of just 6 years and 11 months of service with British Railways. No. 92240 ended up at Dai Woodham’s famous scrapyard at Barry in South Wales where it remained rusting away there until October 1978 when it was bought for preservation by members of the Bluebell Railway. No. 92240 was the first of the preserved 9F’s that had been rescued from Barry to be restored to traffic when it returned to steam on the Bluebell Railway in 1990. As part of the restoration a new tender for the locomotive was built in the workshops at Sheffield Park on the Bluebell Railway. This was done using an underframe salvaged from the Duport steelworks at Briton Ferry who had purchased tenders from Woodham Brothers for use at the steelworks. Although the engine was originally attached to a BR1G type tender whilst in service with BR it was decided to replicate a BR1C type tender as two BR1G tenders were already preserved. No. 92240 was a popular memeber of the Bluebell Railway’s running fleet during the 1990s until the early 2000s when it was withdrawn from service in November 2002. Having stood out of service and in storage for a number of years, work is now progressing on another overhaul at Sheffield Park with the aim of having No. 92240 back operating at the Bluebell Railway by 2028.

The Middleton Railway can now plan for the restoration of the locomotive, initially cosmetically and then to working order as funds permit. It can now be cared for as part of their Leeds Collection of locomotives.
