The former Hall & Co, Hunslet built 0-4-0T Works No. 1684, has been bought by the Middleton Railway from its previous owners the GWR 1338 Locomotive Trust. A lot of work is needed for the locomotive to be brought back to working order, something which could not be done whilst owned by GWR 1338 Locomotive Trust. The Middleton Railway can now plan for the restoration of the locomotive, initially cosmetically and then to working order as funds permit. It can now be cared for as part of their Leeds Collection of locomotives.

This small tank engine is a unique design from Hunslet. It had several owners before ending up at to Kilmersdon Colliery in Somerset in 1964. Preserved in 1968 it was kept at various sites until it arrived at the Middleton Railway.

For a British small industrial loco it has some very rare features, notably a Belpaire firebox, and outside Walschearts valve gear.
