Great Western Railway 4-6-0 No. 5972 'Olton Hall' Posted by: Russell Newman on Jul 3, 2025 @ 14:07:41
Like the rest of the GWR Hall Class 4-6-0s, No. 5972 was built at the Great Western Railway’s Swindon Works in 1937 and is the youngest of the unmodified Hall Class in preservation. She spent most of her working life all over the Great Western system, first being shedded at Carmarthen in South Wales, where it remained until 1951. During her time in service with the GWR and British Railways she was shedded at Plymouth Laira, Ebbw Junction, Stafford Road, Oxley, Truro, Penzance, Plymouth Laira again in 1958, Severn Tunnel Junction, Neath, Fishguard Goodwick and Old Oak Common in West London. Until finally Cardiff East Dock from June of 1963, where she was withdrawn from service by British Railways in December 1963.

Then it was sent to the famous Dai Woodham’s famous scrapyard at Barry in South Wales where it remained rusting away there until 1981, when it was rescued by David Smith and moved to his engineering site at Procor (UK) Ltd in Wakefield for restoration. It was partly restored in Wakefield before moving to Carnforth in Lancashire for completion to mainline standards at the former Steamtown Centre which is now the depot for West Coast Railway Company which is run by the owner, David Smith. The restoration was completed in 1998, where it was tested and run-in at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and did some mainline runs over the Settle and Carlisle line.

From 2000 the locomotive was selected to appear as the Hogwarts Express locomotive in the very popular Harry Potter film series from 2001 to 2011, where it was painted in the fictitious ‘Hogwarts Railway’ Red livery and renamed as "Hogwarts Castle" for the film. The filming for the first film with the locomotive took place at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, but most of the filming was done at London’s Kings Cross Station and from 2002, the West Highland Line between Fort William and Mallaig and over Rannoch in Scotland. This was the furthest north of the UK a Great Western Railway Hall Class locomotive had ever been! Filming also took place with the locomotive on a short section of track laid at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire. I

In between filming, No. 5972 was used on some mainline railtours with its operator West Coast Railway Company as well as being used sometimes on the "Jacobite" Steam Train service in Scotland and it was also used on the Scarborough Spa Express and even appearing at railway open day events. It even made a visit to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway for one of their Cotswold Festival of Steam events in 2009. During the Gala, it worked double headed with the National Railway Museum’s famous ex GWR Churchward City Class 4-4-0 No. 3717 (3440) "City of Truro", the first steam locomotive to have reached 100mph. It was also visiting the railway and it was a crowd pleaser to see them.

When the Harry Potter film series ended No. 5972 "Olton Hall" spent some time at the National Railway Museum at York on display as well as being used for Harry Potter themed events there, she also continued operate out on the mainline working railtours until the end of its mainline and boiler ticket in 2014, after this the locomotive had a cosmetic makeover and was loaned and placed on static display at the Warner Brothers Studio Tour at Leavesden in Hertfordshire where the Harry Potter film series was filmed and is still on display there today. Although the locomotive is on long term loan to them and a very popular display there at the Warner Brothers Studio Tour, will we ever see No. 5972 "Olton Hall" run on the mainline or heritage railways again? Well, only time will tell.

British Railways 2-10-0 No. 92212Posted by: Russell Newman on Jul 1, 2025 @ 07:07:57
Sorry this is a re-write. This is the history and insite of BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No. 92212, which is one of six of the Swindon built 9F’s to survive in preservation out of Fifty-three 9F’s that were built at Swindon Works between 1954 to 1960 out of a total of 251, 9F’s built between Swindon and Crewe Works. No. 92212 was among the last batch of 9F’s built at Swindon in September 1959, and it went new to Banbury in the same year. It had a breif stint at Bath Green Park, where it worked over the legendry Somerset and Dorset Joint Line from June 1961 until September that year when it was transferred to Ebbw Junction and then to Tyseley from July 1962. Its last shed it worked from for British Railways in its last years of service was at Carnforth in Lancashire from November 1966. Where worked out of until it was withdrawn from service in January 1968 and was one of the last few BR Standard 9F’s to just make it into the final year of steam on British Rail, but didn’t quite make it to the very end sadly. No. 92212 would end up at Dai Woodham’s famous scrapyard at Barry in South Wales along with many other steam locomotives that went there to rust away. No. 92212 would remain at Barry until September 1979 after being there for eleven years. It moved to the Great Central Railway up at Loughborough in Leicestershire for restoration and steamed again in the Autumn of 1996. No. 92212 operated at the Great Central Railway and visited many other preserved railways around the UK until it was withdrawn from service for another overhaul, which by this time it had been sold to Jeremy Hosking in 2006. No. 92212 returned to steam again at its current base at the Mid Hants Railway (the Watercress Line) in 2011, where it operated along with visits to other preserved railways until it was withdrawn from service again for another overhaul its second in preservation. No. 92212 is currently still being overhauled in the workshops at Ropley, where it is to use the boiler from sister 9F No. 92245.
