1466 has been out of traffic since January 2026 with various issues with the boiler, which has been removed from the frames in order for repairs to be carried out. It is hoped for it to be back in traffic soon

With testing and running-in completed, the ex GWR 1400 Class 0-4-2T No. 1466, which was the first steam locomotive bought for preservation by the Great Western Society will be launched back into traffic at Didcot Railway Centre during a special return to steam on No. 1466 event from the 23rd to 25th of August 2025.

The ex GWR 42XX Class 0-4-2T No. 1466, has now left Williton on the West Somerset Railway and has relocated back home to the Great Western Society at Didcot Railway Centre at Didcot in Berkshire.

The overhaul of ex GWR 42XX Class 0-4-2T No. 1466, is now completed and the locomotive is operational again as it was steamed for the first time in 23 years and has made a light engine moves whilst confined to yard limits at Williton on the West Somerset Railway only. Like all locos fresh from overhaul, there is a small snagging list which quite is to be expected in locomotive ex works from overhaul and will be sorted accordingly. If things go well No. 1466 will be returning home to Didcot Railway Centre at the end of the week.

A milestone was reached in the overhaul of ex GWR 42XX Class 0-4-2T No. 1466, as the boiler was successfully steam tested and will be returned to the locomotive for the final stage of the overhaul to be completed.

As of the beginning of July 2021, 1466 has relocated to Williton on the West Somerset Railway where it is planned to complete its overhaul to working order.

The ex GWR 42XX Class 0-4-2T No. 1466 is currently at the Dean Forest Railway at Norchard in Gloucestershire where it is being overhauled by Western Steam Engineering in their workshops at Norchard.

GWR 42XX Class 0-4-2T No. 1466 is to go for a contract overhaul carried out by Western Steam Engineering at their workshops at Norchard on the Dean Forest Railway. For it to steam again in time for the 60th anniversary of Great Western Society in 2021.
