Construction of new-build BR Standard Class 3MT 2-6-2T No. 82045, is progressing steadily as the locomotive nears the final stages. The new BR6 type boiler built at the Severn Valley Railway’s boiler shop at Bridgnorth has seen a coating of Rustoleom protective paint applied to it and work has continued with turning lengths of steel strip into crinoline bands that will be used to support the boiler barrel cladding. To allow the boiler to fit into the chassis of the locomotive, the water tanks will need to be removed, a task that is scheduled for the near future. While the side tanks are off, they will be shot-blasted to provide a good surface for when they are painted. Before the tanks are removed, work will continue to complete the removal of the vacuum pipework where the pipes are routed under the left-hand side tank before emerging inside the main frames. A similar convoluted path is used to route the carriage warming pipe under the right-hand tank. However, that pipework will not be removed until after the tanks have been painted and refitted to the locomotive. The building of No. 82045 has been very successful and there are now plans to build a brand new BR Standard 3MT 2-6-0 tender locomotive of the Riddles 2-6-0 77000 Class that would be well-suited to service on today’s heritage lines.

Another milestone was reached in the contruction of new-build BR Standard Class 3MT 2-6-2T No. 82045, as the main construction of its newly built boiler has now been completed in the Severn Valley Railway’s boiler shop at Bridgnorth, as this is the first time that a brand new type BR6 boiler has been built in the UK since the early 1950s. The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust will now engage a company that has portable machining equipment to carry out precision facing of all the pads on the barrel and firebox. This is necessary in order to ensure perfect fitting of all the ancillaries that will be bolted on. Once this is done the next stage will be to carry out an in-house hydraulic test on the new boiler before it can be steam tested for the first time. There is still a fair amount of work left still but No. 82045 is in the final stages of construction.

A milestone was reached in the contruction of new-build British Railways Standard Class 3MT 2-6-2T No. 82045, as its newly built boiler, built in the Severn Valley Railway’s boiler shop at Bridgnorth was trial fitted on the locomotive for the very first time. The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust, builders of No. 82045 reported the boiler and firbox fitted very well and after a small amount of adjustment, it was removed from the frames for further work towards completion, including the final joining of the barrel to the firebox and smokebox. All the tubes are on-site, ready to be fitted towards the end of the summer, with the aim of having No. 82045 being steamed for the first time and undergoing testing towards the end of the year.

The construction on newbuild British Railways Standard Class 3MT 2-6-2T No. 82045 has also reached another milestone as the newly built side tanks have been fitted to the locomotive for the first time and also No. 82045 will be leaving the Severn Valley Railway insemi-complete form for the first time for a visit to the Warley National Model Railway Exhibition on the 26th and 27th of November 2022, where No. 82045 will be on display during the event. Afterwords the locomotive will return to the Severn Valley Railway for the final stages of its construction where it is hoped that No. 82045 will be in steam for the first time in 2024.

The construction on new build British Railways Standard Class 3MT 2-6-2T No. 82045 has also reached a milestone as at the end of 2021 the front and rear pony truck wheels were fitted to the locomotive making No. 82045 a 2-6-2T for real now. Work is still progressing with work focussing on the construction of the boiler and firebox in the boiler shop at Bridgnorth and the construction of the side tanks. It is hoped that the locomotive will be completed and steamed for the first time in 2023.

No example of the British Railways Class 3 2-6-2 tank engine was preserved, despite being an example of what would be a useful type for preserved railway use, surviving on the Southern Region up to 1967.

Well, this group is working to change that and the frames of the reconstructed design exist, as the photo shows. Still a long way to go, but there is enough material now for the project to be taken seriously. All the originals were built at Darlington works so this is the first to be built elsewhere.
