London Midland & Scottish Railway 4-6-0 No. 44871 (4871)Posted by: Russell Newman on Dec 31, 2024 @ 06:12:10
Having finnished its busy mainline running season for the year, the ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 44871, has returned to the East Lancashire Railway for movement to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. at Bury for its winter maintenance to be ready for another season on the mainline and heritage railway circuit in 2025. No. 44871 has had a really busy season on the mainline hauling trains for railtour operator the Railway Touring Company during 2024, as with the current situation of the lack of central door locking not being fitted to West Coast Railway Company’s fleet of Mk1 Carriages for steam charter use and the use of their air braked Mk2 carriages being used instead along with the lack of other suitable steam locomotives with air braking available to haul those trains during the year, this ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 did an enormous amount of work on the mainline during 2024. A credit to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. operating No. 44871 in 2024.

If it will ever return to mainline railtour duties in 2025 given the current situation with central door locking not being fitted to West Coast Railway Company’s fleet of Mk1 Carriages is qustionable? But No. 44932 will be maintained and kept to mainline standards still for other work for the time being at leasted.

London Midland & Scottish Railway 4-6-0 No. 44806 (4806)Posted by: Russell Newman on Dec 29, 2024 @ 11:12:02
This is the history and insite of ex LMS Black Five No. 44806, No. 44806 or No. 4806 its LMS number was built in 1944 at Derby Works, and had spent most of its working life in the Midlands and Northwest of the UK, having been first shedded at Toton Depot from 1944. Its last shed on BR (British Railways) was at Lostock Hall from April 1968. No. 44806 is another end of steam survivor from 1968, as it had finnished its working days with BR having been used as station pilot at Preston as its final dutiess in August that year. No. 44806 was bought by the late Kenneth Aldcroft and was preserved at Carnforth Motive Power Depot, then operating as Steamtown Carnforth, and for a time it became a Green Five!! An odd livery for a Black Five then. In 1973 No. 44806 was moved to the then newly opened Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, but was not idea for the line being too big for their operations and with basic facilities then. During its short time at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway it received the name "Magpie" after the ITV Childrens Show of the same name which No. 44806 was featured in it then. In 1974 No. 44806 was moved to the now long closed Steamport Southport Centre where it spent some time in storage there, but in the 1990s it moved to the Llangollen Railway where it ran from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2013. In 2014 No. 44806 was sold and was moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where it ran until it was withdrawn for another overhaul in 2018. In 2020 it was sold again to Peter Best a long-time benefactor to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and returned it to steam again in 2023 and since then No. 44806 is a popular member to the running fleet at the railway.

Iraqi Railway(WD) 2-8-0 No. 1429(547)Posted by: Russell Newman on Dec 27, 2024 @ 13:12:01
The former War Department and Iraqi Railway 8F 2-8-0 No. 1429 (WD No. 547), is one of the amazing steam survivors. Built in 1941 by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, Scotland, it was sent out to Iraq during the Second World War and was one of 12 LMS 8F 2-8-0 locomotives acquired by the Iraqi State Railways after the war between 1945 and 1948. There was an attempt to repatriate this locomotive back to the UK back in 1990 but sadly it was thwarted by the outbreak of the first Gulf War. No. 1429 was last heard of in 2014, when plans were being made for a cosmetic restoration, but nothing has been heard of it since then??
