Chosen in the 1950s as a locomotive destined for the national railway museum, it was restored and preserved in Rome and then in Merano. In the 1980s it returned to Castelvetrano and was unfortunately demolished in October 2001 together with R302 028 and 033.

The Class R302 was a more powerful superheated version of Class R301, of which 42 examples were built by OM e Navali, Napoli for work on the FS narrow gauge in Sicily. Many of the locomotives in each class were fitted with oil tanks behind the chimney on top of the boiler, i. e. making them capable of being dual fired. This locomotive is No. R302.23 (NOT 302.023) and was previously stored at Roma Smistamento depot prior to display.
