Unknown 2-4-0T No. 11 'Criollo'Posted by: Douglas Bailey on Dec 25, 2024 @ 08:12:05
The exact origins of Criollo are not certain, possibly originally built by Manning Wardle in the 1880s. It has been suggested to be North Western Uruguay Railway (NWUR) No. 11 Hasketh (Manning Wardle No. 634 of 1877 as a standard MW F class 0-4-0ST) originally used by Baynes & Squire contractors who imported the loco into Uruguay and purchased by NWUR around 1882/83. However Hasketh had outside cylinders and some other differences. Regardless it was rebuilt by the NWUR in 1895 at Salto works and named Criollo for NWUR use, with the cab and wheels matching the dimensions of other larger NWUR locos built by Hunslet.

London Midland & Scottish Railway 2-8-0 No. 48773 (8233)Posted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on Dec 24, 2024 @ 08:12:00
Ken Livermore, of the North British Locomotive Preservation Group wrote in their recent newsletter:

After returning to the UK from their overseas service as WD 70307, 70320 and 70583 they were based on the Longmoor Military Railway in Hampshire and renumbered WD500, 501 and 512 before being sold to British Railways in 1957. They were wrongly identified as Austerity 90000 Class 2-8-0’s and mistakenly given the numbers 90733 (48773) 90734 (48774) and 90735 (48775) before the error was realised. Despite the fact that all three had previously run on the LMS (as numbers 8233, 8246 and 8025) a decision was made to tack them on to the end of the existing 8F Class numbers so they became 48773 – 48775 !
