Ken Livermore, of the North British Locomotive Preservation Group wrote in their recent newsletter:

After returning to the UK from their overseas service as WD 70307, 70320 and 70583 they were based on the Longmoor Military Railway in Hampshire and renumbered WD500, 501 and 512 before being sold to British Railways in 1957. They were wrongly identified as Austerity 90000 Class 2-8-0’s and mistakenly given the numbers 90733 (48773) 90734 (48774) and 90735 (48775) before the error was realised. Despite the fact that all three had previously run on the LMS (as numbers 8233, 8246 and 8025) a decision was made to tack them on to the end of the existing 8F Class numbers so they became 48773 – 48775 !

The Stanier 8F Locomotive Society, who are the owners of ex LMS 8F 2-8-0 No. 48773, are recruiting new members to take an active part in the story of this uniquely well-travelled locomotive. No. 48773 has a glorious past in both war and peace, and the Society is intending to return the locomotive to working order - but to do that, they need new recruits to come volunteer with them. A series of special event weekends are to take place at the Severn Valley Railway at the Engine House, on the weekends of the 6th and 7th and and 20th and 21sth of April 2024, which details can be found on the Stanier 8F Locomotive Society’s website.

It is worth noting that this locomotive has operated in six countries on three continents. Other numbers it has carried are Iranian Railways 41.109, and WD

Some new information has come to light on 48773. The locomotive was not sheded at Lostock Hall Shed in the final year of steam in 1968. It was sheded at Rose Grove and was the among the last of the 8Fs sheded there. 48773 was the last steam locomotive in service at Rose Grove shed on August the 4th 1968 and was among the last steam locomotives to work the farewell to steam specials that day in 1968.

LMS 8F 2-8-0 No. 48773 is to come out of the Engine House Museum at Highley and join LMS Black 5 No. 45110 on display at Kidderminster station during the Severn Valley Railway s Last Days of Steam event to be held on the 4th of August 2018. No. 48773 was among the last 8Fs in service in the final months of steam in 1968 and was sheded at Lostock Hall Shed in the final months of steam. It was a prime candidate for preservation then as it had a overhaul 2 years before which 48773 was saved by the Stanier 8F Locomotive Society and moved to the Severn Valley Railway where it has been ever since.
