Great Western Railway (Cardiff Railway Co.) 0-4-0ST No. 1338 (5)Posted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on Jun 7, 2025 @ 14:06:48
Built in Leeds by Kitson & Co. in the late 19th Century for the Cardiff Railway, this was a standard Kitson design whose short wheelbase was ideal for dock shunting where there were sharp radius curves.

As built it would have been a well tank loco featuring Kitson's patent valve gear, which is prominent in this and in album photos. Originally it was hidden behind a plate, making the loco look like a side tank loco. The Great Western took control of the Cardiff Railway in 1923 and subsequently rebuilt the loco as a saddle tank design, revealing the valve gear and 'Westernising' the loco. The safety valves on top of the dome are an example of this. Notice the bell ahead of the cab, necessary in the confined spaces of the Cardiff dockland.

Unknown 4-8-4 No. 4402Posted by: Matthew Gardner on Jun 5, 2025 @ 15:06:09
I have read on an online forum this engine is in fact homemade. The boiler was also not built to any code, and is rather sketchy in construction. Due to this, it was only fired up a handfull of times. It also had traction issues as was related. The original owner also owned an 18" gauge 2-6-0 which is currently either operable or being restored.

British Railways 2-6-2T No. 41313Posted by: Russell Newman on Jun 5, 2025 @ 14:06:46

No. 41319 was a regular engine shedded at Tunbridge Wells West during BR Days (as was No. 41313) and operated between Eridge and Polegate during the 1960s. No. 41313 was withdrawn in June 1965 so this visit not only coincides with 60 years since closure of the Cuckoo Line but also since No. 41313 last steamed for British Railways.

Quincy & Torch Lake RR 2-6-0 No. 3Posted by: Matthew Gardner on Jun 1, 2025 @ 19:06:53
This engine may never even be put back together. It was owned by a private owner, whom has since passed, and the title for the engine has been lost. Also, many of the parts have rotted away to the elements, and as such will have to be re-made.
