This rare and interesting loco is a Fairlie type with a double ended boiler and central firebox. The cylinders are at the inner ends of the power bogies, not the outer ends as on the Ffestiniog Railway's Fairlies, which is more like a Saxon Meyer.

This locomotive is a Southern Pacific M-6 Class Mogul. It was built for the Southern Pacific and operated solely by the Southern Pacific. It was never owned by the Union Pacific. It had no damage to its front end and throughout its entire life, it’s highly likely it never left the state of California.

Standard Steam Locomotive Company 4-6-2 No. 72010 'Hengist'Posted by: Steve Frost on Apr 1, 2018 @ 13:04:17
This is a new build project that has had a difficult and prolonged start, but significant progress seems to be starting with assembly of the locomotive frame at CTL Steel of Sheffield. The locomotive will be the 11th of this type to be built. The original class was a small in number and the smallest British Railways Pacific design with a power classification of 6MT. They all bore the names of Scottish Clans so were known as the 'Clan' class, which prompts the question as to why it will carry the name 'Hengist' when completed.

The reason is that 15 additional locomotives were planned for use on British Railways' Southern region and names from Scottish Clans were not appropriate to their proposed region. With modernisation of the railways and orders for diesel-electric locos being made, the order for additional 'Clans' was cancelled. All of the original batch of locos were scrapped.

Puerto Eten 0-4-2 No. 4Posted by: Steve Frost on Apr 1, 2018 @ 13:04:28
Maybe I am wrong but this looks more like a 2-4-2 which is missing the leading truck. How else could the heavy front end be supported?

According to Trains Magazine November 2016, this is the oldest American-built, horizontal-boiler steam locomotive in the United States. Camden & Amboy #1 “John Bull” is the oldest steam locomotive in the United States, but it was built in the United Kingdom and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean and assembled in the US. Three Baltimore & Ohio locomotives are also older, but they are vertical boilers. Therefore, Natchez & Hamburg Railroad “Mississippi” is the oldest existing, standard-looking (horizontal boiler), American-built, locomotive in the United States.
