On December 22nd, 2020, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization called the RWH Foundation (short for the Foundation for the Preservation of Western Heritage and Steam Trains) was created to undertake the restoration of this Climax locomotive to operate on the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad.

As of 2017, the shop crew has been able to restore the frame to the point that the engine set can turnover on steam. Also, a nonprofit group is forming to restore the locomotive to operation.

I was told by the shop foreman there that the climax will NOT be restored until a bigger shop is built and there is no telling when that will be

This is said to be the last Climax Geared locomotive ever made. It will be a long time before anything happens to this engine.

The locomotives restoration did not start in 2007, and with the current work being completed on the Sonora #7, the work on #5 will not likely begin in the foreseeable future. Roaring Camp not only has the #7 to finish, but also 3 other historic locomotives that we manage to maintain. Plus, there is no shop space for the #5...

Again Chris is wrong... there is a Climax boiler that needs rebuilding and as time and funds permit the restoration will begin.  The largest obstacle to overcome is the reduction of gauge from standard, 48", and now to 36".  Currently the story being fed by the conductor is the loco will begin restoration in 2007.  Don't count on it... We have our hands full keeping the current roster running.

The locomotive is to be back in operation as soon as 2007.  A new boiler has been placed on the locomotve but there is a lot more work to do on the running gear.

This locomotive is in the process of restoration.  The new boiler it required was acquired in early 2001 from the Sumpter Valley Railroad.  I belive that the SV got 2 or 3 flatcars and 2 pair of trucks in the deal.
