Mount Tamapais & Muir Woods Ry Heisler - 2 truck No. 9Posted by: Matthew Gardner on Feb 1, 2022 @ 12:02:14
Last surviving engine of Mt Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railroad, last engine to be bought, and largest ever to be bought. It was never liked by them, however, and only ran for 4 years under them. Ironically, It had all sorts of awkward problems during its time there. Its rear axle would overheat at slower speeds, not faster, until salt was spilled on it, then it stopped. Then she spat 5 feet of fire out the stack whilst climbing the mountain so her smokebox was cherry red at the summit, until her flues were welded with an electric welder. It all stopped after that. Only one mechanic could make the engine behave, so it became his engine. Then one day, he got suspended after reaching 60 mph going downhill with it!

Bear Harbor Lumber Co. 2-4-2T No. 2Posted by: Matthew Gardner on Feb 1, 2022 @ 12:02:47
This locomotive is featured in a 1935 edition of Railroad Magazine in an article about an 8 mile logging railroad complete with a double boiler sawmill that never ran! It was stricken by several tragedies, which included all the timber that did get cut getting washed away by flood, to a new owner that just bought the place suddenly committing suicide with no apparent reason, and other things. The sawmill was never fired up or anything! The engine here, was bought for the railroad, along with the 1892 built engine this association runs, but they were abandoned in the woods after only a few years. This particular engine has I think only 12 years of service on it all in all!
