Victorian Railways 2-8-0 No. K 154Posted by: Robin R Beck on Feb 17, 2018 @ 11:02:59
Withdrawn in June 1971. Purchased by Gippsland Folk Museum, in the town of Moe where nearly 30 years of outdoor display in a wet climate did a lot of damage. The tender was so wasted it was scrapped. From 2003 some dismantling was done on site for possible restoration. Instead in 2005 the parts were removed to Newport Workshops. The boiler was to badly damaged and it also was scrapped.

A project was started to use parts of K154 in making an operational N class steam loco. The frames have already been altered. A boiler from Swan Hill has been sourced, it being in a better condition than those still dumped at Newport Works. The project may be on hold, or just space was needed in the main workshops as the frames are now stored in the none public area of the works.

This locomotive utilizes an air "motor" which differs from a steam engine, since compressed air is introduced into a chamber in lieu of combusted gasoline or diesel fuel, so the motor more closely resembles and performs more similarly to an internal combustion engine than a steam engine. Sir motors such as these were used in mining operations both in fixed and mobile applications.

A classic British design for an industrial user. Hudswell Clarke was one of a number of loco builders based in Leeds and Leeds produced more locomotives than any other British city. Sadly locomotive manufacture has ceased in Leeds.
