Stewarts & Lloyds 0-6-0ST No. 'Juno'Posted by: Phil Horton on Jul 29, 2019 @ 13:07:11
In addition to those built for the NCB, during the 1950s and early 1960s, Hunslet also built a number of ‘Austerity’ saddle tanks for other industries. Just one of these, (Hunslet No. 3850, 1958) was built new for Stewart & Lloyds Minerals (later British Steel) for work on their ironstone railways around Corby in Northants.

Here, named 'Juno', it worked at their Buckminster Quarries on the South Lincolnshire/Leicestershire border. The output from the quarries was taken by BR along the High Dyke branch to the East Coast Mainline. In 1967 these quarries were linked to the Market Overton system in Rutland to the south. The engine last worked in August 1968 and, despite attempts to make Market Overton shed a steam preservation centre (Flying Scotsman and other main line engines were based there for a time), the whole setup closed during the mid 1970s. By this time Juno was already preserved and was working at Quainton Road, Buckinghamshire. It later went to the Isle of Wight Railway Steam Railway but is now at the NRM's site at Shildon in County Durham.

Laura Colliery (War Department) 0-6-0ST No. 8811 (75024, Laura 12, LV13)Posted by: Phil Horton on Jul 27, 2019 @ 13:07:28
Wikipedia page for Hunslet Saddle tanks states:

'Sold directly from WD to Laura colliery, Eygelshoven (NL) in 1945, numbered 'Laura 12' (later LV 12). Out of use 1967. Then the boiler of LV 13, before 1962 known as 'Julia IV' (ex NS 8811, ex WD 75080), was placed on the frame of LV 12 (ex WD 75024).

The colliery numbered its locomotives after their boilers and not after the frame numbers (as practiced by WD and most railway companies) so this means the loco became LV 13 after its boiler. Went out of service after colliery closed in 1974. Was still under steam in 1975 when cleaning up the remains of the colliery, giving this locomotive the status of last operational steam engine in The Netherlands. Stored in the former locomotive shed until discovery in 1981. Operates today with a new boiler (RAW Görlitz 20/1995) on the LV 12 frame (WD 75024). NS numbering follows the frame. So this never was a NS engine. The NS-number 8811 is fictional but fun.'

PKP (DR) 0-8-0 No. Px29-1701 (99.2575)Posted by: Dale W Fickés on Jul 22, 2019 @ 12:07:16
On 6th July 2019 the locomotive carried no identity but, according to the driver, two locomotives had been re-built into one. Certainly signs of de-construction were observed over the wall at the rear of the workshops. Given that No. Px29-1705 has been displayed as a plinth (which we did not observe - possibly replaced by one of three ex SJ locomotives though we did not cover the entire premises) and could have been sent for scrap, a combination of Nos. Px29 1701 & 1702 are the most likely candidates?
