Holden F5 Locomotive Trust 2-4-2T No. 789Posted by: Russell Newman on Mar 22, 2021 @ 12:03:30
The Great Eastern Railway M15r Class (latterly LNER Class F5) 2-4-2T was designed by James Holden and was a improvement upon members of the earlier M15 (LNER F4) Class 2-4-2T introduced by Thomas William Worsdell. All were built at the Great Eastern Railway’s Stratford Works in East London from 1884 to 1909. They were built mainly for branch line work across East Anglia and they were best remembered working on the now closed Maldon to Witham Branch in Essex and the Epping Ongar Branch in Essex before that line came part of London Undergrounds Central Line in the 1950’s. Sadly none survived the cutters torch as the last one was withdrawn in 1958. However Since 2003 this F5 2-4-2T No. 789 is being built from scratch by the Holden F5 Steam Locomotive Trust at Tyseley Locomotive Works for use on the heritage railway circuit and will fill a missing link in preserved ex Great Eastern and LNER locomotives. Its planned for No. 789 to be turned out in the iconic Great Eastern Railway's dark blue livery when completed. But it's got a bit of a way still to go in its construction so do please support the project.
