Long Island RR 4-6-0 No. 39Posted by: Richard Hood on Aug 1, 2025 @ 05:08:33
A recent campaign begun by the Railroad Museum of Long Island and mentioned on the "Steam Up LIRR 39" Facebook page seeks to raise $1.2 million by 2030 to bring this Pennsy-designed G5 Ten-Wheeler back to operational status. If this succeeds, 39 will likely be a resident of and primarily operate at the Strasburg Rail Road, although in answer to a recent comment I made on a Facebook post about this engine referencing my interest in seeing a possible rendezvous of 39 and Pennsy 1361, the group did not rule out the potential of 39 venturing to other interested shortlines or tourist roads, and their exact quote was "The sky is the limit" for this project. I wish them the best of luck in getting this fine Pennsy-Designed and Altoona-built loco back on the rails.

The works number 51 seems a little on the low side to me. For example, Warren & Ouachita Valley RR 4-6-0 No.1 was built in 1906 under works number 29750. It is time for contributors to check their information very carefully.
