London & South Western Railway 4-4-0 No. 30120 (120)Posted by: Russell Newman on Feb 26, 2026 @ 19:02:22
I has been announced that an agreement between the 563 Locomotive Group and the National Railway Museum has been reached to overhaul the ex LSWR T9 4-4-0 No. 30120, back to steam again. Engineering work is already underway, with the overhaul being split between the Swanage Railway’s Herston Works and the Flour Mill in the Forest of Dean. The race is now on with the aim of returning No. 120 which is what the locomotive will be in Southern Olive Green livery to steam over the next three years, in time for its 130th birthday in 2029. The extensive overhaul will require the combined engineering effort and expertise from both sites to undertake the restoration work which includes, a complete engine overhaul on the frames at the Swanage Railway’s Herston Works including the replacement of the previously repaired cylinder block. Boiler overhaul and full refurbishment of the only surviving LSWR watercart tender by the Flour Mill Works at Bream in Gloucestershire. The project is estimated to cost around £750,000 and thanks to the generous support from donors and a substantial bequest, already have around half of that sum. This gives a very strong foundation that allows work to begin immediately, but the project still needs help in order to keep up project’s long term progress. For details to help fund the overhaul, details can be found on both the Swanage Railway and the 563 Locomotive Group’s websites and social media pages.
