The ex GWR Hall Class 4-6-0 No. 4953 "Pitchford Hall", is to make its first ever visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for their Annual Steam Gala from the 26th to 29th of September 2024.

Prior to its visit to the Severn Valley Railway for their Autumn Steam Gala, the ex Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Aspinall 23 Class 0-6-0ST No. 11456, has been painted back into its LMS livery for the first time in preservation.

Wemyss Private Railway 0-6-0T No. 20

With the overhaul of BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T No. 80105, now completed, the ex Wemyss Private Railway Andrew Barclay built 0-6-0T (Works No. 2068) No. 20, has now been moved into the main workshops of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society at the Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway for its restoration to steam again to continue.

The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, has now left the Colne Valley Railway in Essex, and has now relocated to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. at Heywood in Lancashire, for the final stage of restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition to mainline standards.

There are moves to see if former Skinningrove Ironworks Fox Walker 1878 built 0-6-0ST Works No. 385 "Minnie", can be put back into working order again, possibly??

Brookfield Foundry 0-6-0PT No. 'Brookfield'

The overhaul on ex Admiralty Machinery Depot and Brookfield Foundry Bagnall built 0-6-0PT No. 2613 "Brookfield", has now been completed, having had major boiler work carried out and firebox repairs and has had a full repaint. Now operational again "Brookfield" will soon undergo steam tests along with testing and running in trials.

Great Western Railway 4-6-0 No. 4079 'Pendennis Castle'

The famous ex GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 No. 4079 "Pendennis Castle", has had to be temporarily withdrawn from service following some issue with the locomotive. An issue has been found with possible boiler water carry over to the cylinders, initial investigation work has found a number of concerns that need to be fixed, and the decision has been made by the Didcot Railway Centre to withdraw the locomotive from service for repairs. Which this means that 4079’s visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for their Annual Steam Gala has had to be cancelled. It is hoped that "Pendennis Castle" will be back operation and out on the heritage railway circuit again in 2025.

The overhaul and rebuild of ex GWR Manor Class 4-6-0 No. 7802 "Bradley Manor", is now in its final stages at Tyseley Locomotive Works, as the boiler has been placed back onth the main chassis of the locomotive and working is progressing on fitting the boiler lagging and outside cladding. It is hoped that No. 7802 will return to the Severn Valley Railway during November 2024 and it will be paired with the tender from ex GWR 28XX Class 2-8-0 No. 2857, following a new partnership between the Erlstoke Manor Fund and the 2857 society who have loaned the tender to them while No. 7802’s brand new 3500 gallon tender is still under construction.

CEGB Newport 0-4-0ST No. 1 'Uskmouth No1'

The overhaul of ex CEGB Newport Peckett built 0-4-0ST Works No. 2147 "Uskmouth No1", has been completed and the locomotive is about to undergo testing and running-in trials before entering service at the Dean Forest Railway in time for their Royal Forest of Steam Gala weekend on the 2nd and 3rd of November 2024.

London & South Western Railway 0-4-4T No. 24 'Calbourne'

Following repairs and the fitment of new tyres on its wheelsets, the ex London & South Western Railway 02 Class 0-4-4T No. W24 "Calbourne", has returned to traffic at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

The ex Tongaat Sugar, Natal Bagnall built 4-4-0T Works No. 2819 now named "Sir George Newnes", is now operational again and back in service at the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway following completion of its overhaul, and will be in action at their Autumn Gala weekend on the 28th and 29th of September 2024.

The overhaul of ex GWR 2884 Class 2-8-0 No. 3850, has now been completed and the locomotive is back operational again and has been turned out in GWR wartime black livery for the first time in preservation and is now undergoing testing and running trials before entering service at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway soon.

Isle of Man Railway 2-4-0T No. 9 'Douglas'

The cosmetic restoration on the Isle of Man Railway’s Beyer Peacock & Co. built 2-4-0T No. 9 "Douglas", is nearing completion as its boiler has been refitted after removal of asbstos lagging and the the cab had been put back on too.

Yes it is correct as No. 762 is at the Vale of Rheidol Railway, as it was a miss type error sorry.

The Vale of Rheidol Railway website clearly shows the loco as No.762. Our record confused the two locos at Hambleton - No. 38 was shown with the alternative number of 765 which should have been 762 whereas No.41 was shown as 762 when it should have been 765. I have corrected both records and moved 38 (762) to Aberystwyth. I sincerely hope this is correct!

Our thanks to Matthew for his note. It is a bit of a conundrum as to how we should describe it after its series of modifications, perhaps for cosmetic purposes only in the present phase. I say present, as who knows what it will become in the future!

This engine was originally built as an 0-4-0t. It was rebuilt into an 0-4-2t. When, I cannot say. It still looked like a true tank engine at the time, but when it was rebuilt into the 4-4-0 it is today in 2014, it no longer looks like a true industrial saddle tank engine. Looking at it in another photo, it looks like the 2 sets of driving wheels are 2 different sizes, so the engine cannot even move with the current configuration!

This engine is now owned by the Buckley Old Engine Show in Buckley, MI. It was acquired in the late 1990s I believe.

The former Gwalior Pacific Railway of Western Railway Bagnall built 4-6-2 Pacific No. 765, has been relocated to its new home at the Vale of Rheidol Railway at Aberystwyth, Ceredigion in Wales, where for the first time since it was repatriated from India, will be on public display for the very first time after many years in storage. No.762 has been out of the public gaze for over four decades, having been stored under cover in the private collection of the then Phyllis Rampton Narrow Gauge Railway Trust. It remains in ‘as withdrawn’ condition, and is effectively a time capsule of it’s time in India. The locomotive will be put on temporary display at Aberystwyth station over the August Bank Holiday weekend from the 24th to 26th of August 2024, as part of the line’s Rheidol Steam Festival event then. Following the event, No.762 will be put back into storage in the sheds at Aberystwyth, but however, the Vale of Rheidol Railway will be announcing further plans for this locomotive later in 2024.
