Sydney Ferries 0-4-0ST No. 103APosted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 12, 2018 @ 13:07:59
Number 103A originally ran on the NSWGT system, one of 90 Baldwin steam trams operating in Sydney. With the closure of the last Sydney government steam tramway in 1937 it was sold along with two other locos to Sydney Ferries to run on there Parramatta Tramway. It operated on this line until line closure on 31st March 1943 then moved to Waddingtons at Granville. Waddingtons was company making bus bodies & railcars. There it was used as a yard shunter. In 1954 it was sold to the tramway preservation group at Parramatta Park where it ran passenger trains on there park tramway.

An arson attack at the park loco shed in 1993 destroyed nearly all their collection. 103A lost all its woodwork, but no major structural damage. The group moved their locos to Valley Heights Roundhouse Museum. 103A now hauls a passenger carriage at least 2 Sundays a month, at first on an internal short track but now on a track which runs alongside the mainline travelling from the museum to just past Valley Heights railway station. The story of Parramatta Tramway. In 1883 a private company opened a 3 mile steam tramway from George Street, Parramatta to a ferry landing at Redbank wharfe on Duck River offering a quicker journey to Sydney. The steam trams used coke, to prevent pollution. The line not only carried passengers and parcels but served various industrial sidings. In 1900 the line was bought by Sydney ferries. Only nine locos worked the line, mostly second hand.

For various reasons the line finally closed in 1943. The three remaining steam locos, which included 103A were put up for sale.

New South Wales Government Tramway 0-4-0Tram No. 100Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 12, 2018 @ 13:07:47
The Sydney steam trams were at their peak in 1895 with over a 100 steam trams and 40 miles of routes. By 1905 the new electric trams were replacing steam trams in the city centre.

By 1910 this loco was in New Zealand working on a Gonville & Castlecliff tramway extension. It was in use until 1912 on the Wanganui line, then rarely used except for a brief time in 1920 due to power supply failure and again in 1950 when the tramway closed.

Now part of the MOTAT collection, and restored by them. Of the three surviving Sydney steam trams this is the least modified as many Sydney modifications to its fleet came after 1910

Sydney Tramways 0-4-0Tram No. 1A (28A)Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 12, 2018 @ 13:07:08
The Powerhouse Museum say it is number 1A which was a Baldwin built loco. Most other sources say preserved steam tram 1A is in fact 28A stating that 1A was in too bad a state to be preserved so a substitute loco was preserved. Number 28A was built by Henry Vale & Sons. They built 13 steam trams for NSWGT at their Pyrmont works in Sydney. All were built to the Baldwin design.

Anyway, a tram called 1A was preserved 1940 and put on display at the Power House Museum from 1988 to 1999. Then it moved to their store at Castle Hill. In 2017 number 1A entered the workshops at Castle Hill where it was cosmetically restored and then loaned to Loftus Tram Museum for 6 months. On 30th July 2017 it was displayed outdoors alongside a trolley bus at the museum on the 80th anniversary of the Kogarah Steam Tramway closure. In June 2018, I had been told by staff at Castle Hill that loco is still at Loftus. Exhibits end up on extended loans, if they are put on display. The original steam tram numbered 1. Was a Baldwin steam tram works number 4617. One of four imported to Sydney. To operate a temporary tram line for 6 months. From Redfern to the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition. It proved so popular the line was extended. As built was a 2 man single control locomotive. From 1905 the steam trams were rebuilt with one man, dual control. An 'A' was added to the its number. So this loco became numbered 1A. At it height Sydney had 40 miles of track and over 100 steam trams. In the early 1900s electric trams started. Slowly taken over the inner city routes. A couple of steam tram lines lasted longer in the suburbs. The Kogarah Steam Tramway being the last. It closed on 3 July 1937, when trolley buses took over the route..

New South Wales Government 0-4-0VB No. 2 'John Bull' Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 12, 2018 @ 12:07:29
A demonstrator steam tram built by Beyer Peacock. It had a Wilkinson Patent exhaust superheater which was designed to reduce smoke. It was shipped to Australia in April 1885 hoping to win some orders. In 1886 it did evaluation tests for New South Wales Government Tramways. In comparison to Baldwin steam trams it was heavy on fuel and quickly ran short of steam so NSWGT stayed with a Baldwin design. It was given no number but named John Bull.

In 1887 it may have been used on railway construction South of Sydney. In 1888 it was in use at Metropolitan Colliery, Helensburgh NSW but in 1889 it was returned to UK where Beyer Peacock altered it to a shunter, then used at their Gorton foundry for nearly 70 years. It became their number 2, often moving brand new locomotives around the works. Put in store in 1959.

In 1962 it moved to Crich tramway museum. It had various periods of steam operation but has not steamed since 1989. Can be found in the display hall. Sometimes it is loaned out on special events.

New South Wales Government Railways 4-6-0 No. 3642Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 10, 2018 @ 12:07:20
This loco has been running passenger trains at most NSW steam events for years. Weeks before it was taken out of traffic it was on display at this year Sydney Transport Heritage Expo. For 3 days from 09.00 until 16.00 the public were being allowed access to the footplate. Hundreds of children of all ages took advantage. Friendly staff there to demonstrate the controls and answer all questions.

When more powerful locos arrived on the NSW railway. The 36 class migrated to working freights which involved many changes of direction. There were complaints about heavy reversing gear. One loco, number 3638, tested power assisted reversing gear in 1958. Later 3642, 3644, 3651 and 3652 were fitted with second hand equipment. NSW railways published distance travelled data on all their steam locos except for locos they preserved for steam specials. So no mileage is known for 3642. Nearly all the 36 class had exceeded 1,700,000 miles, the odd one over 1,900,00 miles before they were all withdrawn by 1969. The loco builder plate is on the cab side. The tender has the builders plate from NSWG 3665.

New South Wales Government Railways 2-4-0T No. 1042Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 10, 2018 @ 11:07:47
The boiler has passed its hydraulic test. Just some fire box studs still to replace due to corrosion damage to cylinders from the many years displayed outdoors. No plans at present to rebuild the loco as an operational engine. Maybe the boiler is to be used powering other exhibits at the museum. When staff are on site, and the main building doors are open this can be seen from Maitland railway station. It is possible to ask to look at there assortment of machinery & vehicles. Very friendly on my visit.
