Western Australia Government Railways 4-6-0 No. 117Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 28, 2018 @ 16:07:56
In service with Western Australia Government Railway in 1897. Withdrawn in 1970. Preserved in Merredin. At first displayed alongside the main road. Later moved into the old railway station museum where it can be seen today. 117 is also visible from any passing passenger train.

The building of a standard gauge line from Kalgoolie to Perth was completed in 1968. Also included was a new railway station at Merredin, a short walk from the 42 inch gauge station. The old station became a railway museum. There is plenty to see at this museum. The 95 lever signal box built on stilts, gives a clear view in both directions. A short walk away is also an excellent military museum.

Millars (Western Australia Government Railways) 4-6-0 No. 71 'Menzies' (111)Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 28, 2018 @ 15:07:00
Ordered and delivered to the Western Australia Government Railway as number 111. In service late 1897 but sold weeks later to Smith & Timms to help with the building of the Kalgoorlie to Menzies railway. Within a year it was sold again, to Millars Karri & Jarah Company Ltd. (later known simply as Millars). It Worked on their timber tramways around Yarloop. In 1939 Millars renumbered the loco 71. It finished its working life at Yarloop. It became the last operating steam loco at the Yarloop timber mill in 1972. Was donated to the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway in 1977.

The locomotive was dismantled at the old steam shed at Pinjarra with a view to future restoration. So far this has not been possible probably due to the high cost of funding the project, plus the volunteers at HVTR have a heavy work load just keeping the railway running. In 2002 the loco frames were put on a flat wagon then later moved to Alumina Junction for storage. Almost all the other parts are behind the old steam shed. (See the album photos - Editor)

It worked on their West Australian timber concessions. Later it was bought by Bunning Bros, another huge logging company. Their largest saw mill was at Manjimup. In an accident the loco suffered heavy damage by a run away timber load. Which led to it being rebuilt, only retaining its own wheels, motion & boiler. South Australian Railways 2-6-0 No. Y 71Posted by: Robin R Beck on Jul 26, 2018 @ 13:07:58
Built by Beyer Peacock for South Australia Railways. After WW1 British ex-service men were encouraged to set up dairy farms in Western Australia. Sawn timber was required for housing. The state Government awarded a timber concession to Jarrah Forest Company.

They started logging in the Busselton and Witchcliffe area. The first sawn timber was produced in 1924. Due to difficulties using horses & tractors to haul logs, in 1927 they purchased Y71 from the South Australia Railway.

The depression of 1929 put the company into liquidation. The assets passed to Adelaide Timber Company. Y71 continued hauling logs to the mill plus finished wood to WAGR siding at Witchcliffe. Working until 1957 when the Busselton to Witchcliffe railway closed. The loco wasput into store. In 1968 it was donated to Rail Heritage. In December 1971 the loco minus tender moved to Bassendean Railway Museum. The tender off WAGR G class number 67 was altered and paired with the loco.

Sturm & Dillard 0-6-0T No. 106Posted by: Matthew Gardner on Jul 22, 2018 @ 12:07:46
I am a volunteer on this railroad, and will probably be one of the chief laborers in the restoration. From what we can tell, this engine is in rough shape. It was heavily neglected by the boys at Sturm & Dillard in her last days of working for them. We have determined that 3 of 4 corners in the firebox are bad, and there is some serious damage to the mud-ring. (They did a sloppy welding job on it.)The bottom section of the firebox on the right side will have to be replaced, and we have not gotten into the boiler yet to see how the shell is.
