Sadly due to over running repairs the ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 5428 "Eric Treacy", will not be taking part in the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s Annual Steam Gala from the 24th to 27th of September 2026, but it maybe seen in the yard at Grosmont during the Gala then.

The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 5428 "Eric Treacy", will be turned out in BR unlined Black livery with its full BR running number No. 45428 for the first time in preservation and for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s Annual Steam Gala from the 25th to 28th of September 2025.

The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 5428 "Eric Treacy" has returned to traffic at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway following completion of work carried out on the wheels and axle boxes along with other work that had been carried out on the locomotive.

Now Numbered 5428 "Eric Treacy" is back in steam following completion of its overhaul at Grosmont and has been painted in its 1930s LMS lined Black livery. The locomotive is currently being tested but should enter traffic at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in August.

45428 has been withdrawn from for its overhaul and is currently being rapidly taken apart.

This LMS 'Black Five' has been resident on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway since the 1970's, when it moved there from Tyesley, Birmingham. It is named after the well known railway photographer, Eric Treacy, who was at one time the Bishop of Wakefield. Hence the bishop's mitre emblem on the name plate.The railway is now the owner of the loco which is dismantled for a very extensive overhaul. The boiler is being completely rebuilt and will need a lot of work, including renewing one of the rings of the boiler shell as well as the outer firebox. Work is continuing.
