These locos were the only steam locos built in Bulgaria, and with works number 1, 48.04 was the first of this small output, so securing its place in Bulgarian railway history... and its survival.

FNC (Dorada Railway) 0-6-0T No. 4 (9) 'Columbia' ('Dona Helena')Posted by: Robin R Beck on Aug 9, 2018 @ 15:08:54
In 1905 one of four Hudswell Clarke built locomotives were supplied to S. Pearson & Sons and shipped to Sabanilla, Columbia then presumably taken by riverboat up the Magdalena River to be used on the Dorada Railway Company. Works numbers 730 & 731 were 4-4-0T locos. Works number 732 & 733 were 0-6-0 tender engines. 733 received the name DONA HELENA. Can find no more history on this loco. An 0-6-0T plinthed outside the old railway station Estacion Montoya in Barranquilla has a plaque saying built by Hudswell Clarke 1904 becoming Dorada Railway Company No 4 named DONA HELENA. So presumed 733 was at some converted to a tank locomotive. Has a new name painted on its tanks. Dorada Railway Company was a British venture to build a railway around the rapids at Honda on the river Magdalena. Magdalena river is the third largest in South America. Navigable for 620 miles, Barranquilla to Honda. After the rapids it is navigable for another 150 miles. So the railway allowed goods to be carried the whole length of the navigable river. This helped Barranquilla become the largest port in Columbia.

Estacion Montoya (railway station), Barranquilla was built in 1871, the first railway station built in Columbia. The Bolivar Railway Company built an eleven mile railway from Barranquilla to Puerto Colombia to carry goods and passengers from the river at Barranquilla to the Caribbean coast at Puerto Colombia where a pier was built to load ships. The building of wharfs at Barranquilla for ocean going ships took the freight away from this railway

SAR 2-8-2 No. 124Posted by: Robin R Beck on Aug 9, 2018 @ 14:08:02
A member of the NG15 class. Number 124 worked on the 600mm gauge Otavi Railway in South West Africa until 1961 when the line was regauged. The whole class was moved to Port Elizabeth to operate on the SAR 24 inch railway going from Port Elizabeth to Avontuur. In 1986 number 124 was painted in green livery for operating on the Apple Express. 124 is now undergoing restoration for future use on the new Apple Express.

The Apple Express a tourist train originally ran from Humewood railway station, Port Elizabeth. Started in 1965 running to Loerie 45 miles away. As well as paying for the journey, a picnic meal could be bought. The motive power was either a NG15 or NG16 locomotive. The express stopped in 2011. A recent project has seen a steam train operate along a part of the line. All restoration & maintenance is carried out in the Humewood Road ex railway diesel depot.

SAR 2-8-2 No. 17Posted by: Robin R Beck on Aug 9, 2018 @ 13:08:49
One of three locos designed & built for the South African Railways to operate on the 600mm gauge Otavi Railway in South West Africa. They became the NG15 class . 19 more were to follow, totalling 21 class members built from 1931 to 1958. SAR 17 was built in 1931 and worked on the Otavi line until 1961 when the whole class was moved to Port Elizabeth, South Africa to operate on the 24 inch railway going from Port Elizabeth to Avontuur. SAR 17 was the first of the NG15 class. Can now be found operating on Sandstone Estate, Ficksburg, South Africa.

The Otavi mine, at Tsumeb, South West Africa (the present Namibia) was rich in copper, lead, zinc and traces of gold & silver. A 600mm railway was built from Tsumeb to the port of Swakopmund 350 miles away. The First World War saw the first 100 miles of track destroyed. Later it was rebuilt as 42 inch gauge. The railway continued to operate with all transfers being done at Karabib. The whole line was rebuilt as 42 inch in 1961.

The Port Elizabeth to Avontuur railway was a 170 mile 24 inch railway finished 1906 allowing fruit & vegetables to be railed to and exported from Port Elizabeth docks. Passenger trains ran until 1940s. After that freight trains still ran often with a passenger coach. The guards van also had compartments for passengers. From 1973 a class of 21 diesels also started operating this line, taking over from the NG15 class. When the traffic was heavy in May to September fruit & veg season steam locos would also operate. Most traffic had changed to road transport by the late 1980s effectively making steam and diesel locos redundant. Only a Limestone quarry at Loerie supplied stone to Port Elizabeth until 2001, keeping a section of the line working. The Apple Express tourist train used this 45 mile section for years.

Western Machinery Company (John Robb) 0-4-0WT No. NonePosted by: Robin R Beck on Aug 8, 2018 @ 16:08:35
One of four new Krauss locos built 1889 (works 2178 - 2181) used by the firm of John Robb for the construction of Victoria Dock, Melbourne. 1892 Robbs employed 2181 on the Happy Valley Reservoir construction in South Australia. 1903 was sold to East Murchison United Gold Mines, in Leinster, Western Australia. 1919 sold again to Western Machinery Co, Kalgoorlie. No idea years it worked there. Western Machinery in 1963 sold it to Lew Whiteman, who moved it to his estate outside Perth. In 1984 he donated the loco to Bennett Brook Railway. There is photos of it slow restoration. Not sure if this work is being done at a private site. I never saw the locomotive on my visits BBR.

The now very different sister engine, Krauss 2179 is at Albion Park, NSW.

South African Railways 2-8-2 No. 123 'Fremantle'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Aug 8, 2018 @ 16:08:53
Built 1949 and started work at The Otavi Railway in South West Africa (Nambia). When the line was regauged it moved to Port Elizabeth to Avontuur railway line in South Africa. In 1985 purchased by Bennett Brook Railway and shipped to Australia. Most have been in good condition as volunteers worked hard so it could operate the first steam hauled passenger train on the BBR on 21 September 1986. Worked trains for another 9 years. A 12 year overhaul had it back in steam 2007. Out of service 2012, now in the middle of a major overhaul. The volunteer staff at BBT do a mountain of work. As well as caring for the extensive railway track, signalling, rolling stock & buildings. They also operate trains for over 200 days a year. The more train running, the more maintenance is required to keep them running, never mind finding funds for repairs. So even though their workshop is full of dismantled locomotives work is progressing on all of them.

South African Railways (Otavi Railway) 2-8-2 No. 118 'Elizabeth'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Aug 8, 2018 @ 16:08:49
The NG15 class was designed & built for the South African Railways to operate on the 600mm gauge Otavi Railway in South West Africa. 21 class members were built from 1931 to 1958. SAR 118 was built in 1938 and worked on the Otavi line until 1961 when the whole class was moved to Port Elizabeth to operate on the SAR 24 inch railway going from Port Elizabeth to Avontuur. From 1973 a class of 21 diesels also started operating this line. Steam use declined. Not sure when 118 last worked. By the late 80s road transport effectively made the diesel locos also redundant.

Bought by Bennett Brook Railway. Shipped from South Africa to Fremantle in 1985. Taken to Whiteman Park & restored at their Mussel Pool workshops. Started hauling trains on Bennett Brook railway in 1994. Ran for eight years. Since then in and out of service with schedule maintenance. Bennett Brook Railway started life at Whiteman Park in 1982. Defiance Coal 0-4-0T No. 1Posted by: Edward M Koehler on Aug 7, 2018 @ 11:08:16
This forty inch gauge saddle tank 0-4-0 steam locomotive was built by the H.K. Porter Company during 1921 for the Defiance Coal Company of Mentmore, New Mexico; unfortunately its builder’s number has been obscured by history to this observer. This locomotive was acquired by the Rail City Museum in Sandy Creek Township in upstate New York in January 1953; acquired at the same time as this locomotive were ten mine run coal cars from the Gibson Coal Company. The locomotive was put on display at Rail City; remaining there until the museum was broken up. In the Fall of 1982 the number 1 was acquired by John Degan of Southampton, New York who mounted it on a truck trailer and began its first restoration to operable condition. During this restoration it was converted from a saddle tank locomotive to a side tank locomotive. Mr. Degan also acquired at least two of the mine run coal cars. At the end of the restoration the number 1 was named “Roy Dunwell” after the welder who had done so much of the work to make it operational. Mr. Degan proudly operated the H.K. Porter number 1 occasionally over the years. The Railroad Museum of Long Island (“RMLI”) acquired the locomotive and its accompanying cars as exhibit pieces by donation during Columbus Day weekend 1999. The two mine run coal cars were restored with new wood parts and were put on exhibit during 2017 in Riverhead.

BDZ (Heeresfeldbahn) 0-8-0T No. 470.60 (HF 1052)Posted by: Dale W Fickés on Aug 7, 2018 @ 05:08:20
The depicted locomotive is NOT HF 1052 but a Sharp Stewart locomotive that was based in Ruse (see 0-6-0 No. 148. In fact this ex German Army 600mm locomotive is actually BDZ No. 470.60 dumped (October 2016) on a low-loader outside Septemvri depot and workshops. Photograph to be supplied.

This has now been corrected and correct photo added (Ed)
