Central Paulista 4-6-0 No. 611(85)Posted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on Jul 26, 2021 @ 16:07:42
The loco is posed to recreate the crash at Paris Montparnasse terminus on 22nd October 1895. What happened was that the late running train from Granville approached the station at too high a speed and the driver failed to apply the brakes. As a result the loco and train hit the buffer stops, ran across the concourse and smashed through the end wall of the building. The loco came to rest in exactly the position in the Brazilian re-creation, in the Place de Rennes. All the train passengers survived, but an unfortunate woman in the street was killed.

The loco was a 2-4-0, No. 721 of the Chemins de fer de l'Oest. When they finally recovered it, the railway workshops found that it had suffered remarkably little damage. The driver was fined 50 francs and jailed for two months. Its notable that the loco used has been given the appropriate number, even though its nothing like the one in the Paris incident.
