London & North Eastern Railway 4-6-2 No. 60009 (4488, 9) 'Union of South Africa'Posted by: Russell Newman on Oct 5, 2021 @ 10:10:17
It's sad to announc that former LNER A4 Pacific No. 60009 "Union of South Africa" has now been withdrawn from service, which this now means that the locomotive has now retired from service for good. The locomotive has been running in preservation longer than with both the London & North Eastern Railway and British Railways together since 1966. I would like to conclude by saying thank you to John Cameron for saving and giving us Number 9 to enjoy on both the main line and heritage railways around the UK, as she will be now sadly missed.

British Railways 2-10-0 No. 92214Posted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on Oct 5, 2021 @ 05:10:40
The final steam design for British Railways was the 9F heavy freight loco. A most successful design - powerful, free running and speedy if given the opportunity. This example wears non authentic BR passenger green livery and carries the name "City of Leicester". (It has carried a number of names in preservation, but was un-named in its working life) The class had a very short working life as the rush to modernisation ended their careers after only five years in some cases. Only one loco ever carried green livery and a name: "Evening Star" at the National Railway Museum, York.

Corris Railway 0-4-2ST No. 3 'Sir Haydn'Posted by: Russell Newman on Sep 27, 2021 @ 12:09:50
This is the history of ex Corris Railway 0-4-2ST No. 3 "Sir Haydn" which is the 3rd locomotive on the Talyllyn Railway. No. 3 was built in 1878 by Hughes’ Loco & Tramway Eng. Works Ltd of Loughborough for the Corris Railway which is other 2ft 3ich narrow gauge railway in Wales. A bit like No. 1 "Talyllyn" was orginally built as a 0-4-0ST but was rebuilt as a 0-4-2ST for better riding at Corris. No. 3 worked on the Corris Railway until its closure in 1948 but in 1951 it was purchased by the Talyllyn Railway along with No. 4 for futhur use with them in preservation. No. 3 was named after the Talyllyn Railway’s late owner, Sir Henry Haydn Jones. But in the early preservation years of the Talyllyn Railway in the 1950’s the precarious state of the track led to its being little used for the first few years, and firebox problems caused its withdrawal in 1957. Following repairs and overhaul No. 3 re-entered service again in 1968 and has been operating ever since and has more recently returned from a major overhaul at the Vale of Rheidol Railway in Aberystwyth and still going strong today. No. 3 "Sir Haydn" was the inspiration for the famous Thomas the Tank Engine character "Sir Handel".

Talyllyn Railway 0-4-0WT No. 2 'Dolgoch'Posted by: Russell Newman on Sep 26, 2021 @ 12:09:07
No. 2 "Dolgoch" was the second locomotive built for the Talyllyn Railway in 1866 by Fletcher Jennings & Co. but to a very different design to that of No. 1 "Talyllyn" being built as a 0-4-0WT with both a back tank (behind the cab) and a well tank (between the frames). With a long wheelbase which allows the firebox to sit in front of the rear axle, with Fletcher’s Patent inside valve gear driven off the front axle, a particularly inaccessible arrangement. No. 2 was the main operational locomotive on the Talyllyn Railway when the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society took over in 1951 and was the main locomotive in the early years of the preservation. But by 1954 to 1963 she underwent overhaul and rebuild and has kept running ever since. In 2011 No. 2 had a brand new boiler made at the Severn Valley Railway’s boilershop at Bridgenorth. Another clame to fame for No. 2 was she was the inspiration for the famous Thomas the Tank Engine character "Rheneas".

Talyllyn Railway 0-4-2ST No. 1 'Talyllyn'Posted by: Russell Newman on Sep 26, 2021 @ 12:09:08
2021 marks the 175th birthday for No. 1 "Talyllyn" which was the first steam locomotive built for use on the Talyllyn Railway in 1865. It was built by Fletcher Jennings & Co. of Whitehaven orginally as a 0-4-0ST with a short wheelbase and long rear overhang which led to its rapid conversion to an 0-4-2ST which gave it a much better riding. It ran for a number of year until 1945 when it was in a very poor state and was laid aside until the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society took over and from 1957 to 1958 No. 1 was sent to Gibbons Bros. Ltd. for a full overhaul and rebuild. But this proved problematic as a number a problems came up and so No. 1 was has undergone considerable modification since then, resulting in a much improved performance and is still a popular locomotive and still going strong at the Talyllyn Railway today. Other clam to fame to No. 1 "Talyllyn" was that she was the inspiration for the famous Thomas the Tank Engine character "Skarloey".
