2021 marks the 175th birthday for No. 1 "Talyllyn" which was the first steam locomotive built for use on the Talyllyn Railway in 1865. It was built by Fletcher Jennings & Co. of Whitehaven orginally as a 0-4-0ST with a short wheelbase and long rear overhang which led to its rapid conversion to an 0-4-2ST which gave it a much better riding. It ran for a number of year until 1945 when it was in a very poor state and was laid aside until the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society took over and from 1957 to 1958 No. 1 was sent to Gibbons Bros. Ltd. for a full overhaul and rebuild. But this proved problematic as a number a problems came up and so No. 1 was has undergone considerable modification since then, resulting in a much improved performance and is still a popular locomotive and still going strong at the Talyllyn Railway today. Other clam to fame to No. 1 "Talyllyn" was that she was the inspiration for the famous Thomas the Tank Engine character "Skarloey".
