The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway has launched Project Axe to help raise funds to overhaul the former French Army, Kerr Stuart built 0-6-0T Works No. 2451 "Axe" back into steam again. Details for Project Axe can be found of their website and social media pages.

Status should be "overhaul". C61 20 is currently in Omiya Works (Saitama) undergoing its heavy general overhaul which comes around once every 7 years in JR East territory. Withdrawn in August 2025, scheduled to return sometime in mid 2026.

With the overhaul now completed on No. 30075, Project 62 has now started to overhaul and rebuild of former Mittal Steelworks Yugoslavian built Class 62 USA Type 0-6-0T No. 30076 formerly No. 62.521 to steam again and modify it to fit within the British loading gauge and like No. 30075 to make it look like a near to look like one of the Southern Railway USA 0-6-0T’s.

The former Longleat Light Railway, Severn Lamb built 0-6-2T No. 3 "Dougal", has been sold to the Ruislip Lido Railway at Ruislip, in Greater London to be their second steam locomotive. No. 3 "Dougal" will shortly be transferred to a specialist contractor to be regauged from 15inch gauge to 12inch gauge to run on the Ruislip Lido Railway and some other adaptions for use at Ruislip, arriving at the lido in mid-2026.

A milestone was reached in the restoration of Alaska Railroad S160 2-8-0 No. 557, as the locomotive was steamed for the very first time in preservation for 65 years as it underwent a successful steam test at the Engine 557 Restoration Company in Wasilla, Alaska.

The overhaul on ex War Department, Longmoor Military Railway and National Coal Board, Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns built Austerity 0-6-0ST (WD No. 75189) No. 152 "Rennes", is almost completed at the Dean Forest Railway as the boiler was placed back onto the frames of the locomotive following completion of work done on it. The bottom end has also received attention, with new axlebox underkeep oil pads fitted, new spring link pins fitted, a deep clean and repaint.

Having worked its final trains at the Great Central Railway (Nottingham), the ex Iron Co. Andrew Barclay built 0-6-0T (Works No. 1245) No. 14, has now been withdrawn from service for its 10-year overhaul. No. 14 is owned by the head of Nemesis Rail at Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire and will most likely be relocating there for for its overhaul.

Point taken, Alan. As we are using the historic counties, rather than the mess of administrative areas that has grown up from successive attempts to restructure local government in the UK, I must concur. Certainly, my 1960 edition of the Oxford School Atlas makes Warwickshire the right area. Changes will come soon!

Discovered completely buried in sand near the mouth of the Whanganui River when coastal defence work was in process, this early New Zealand built loco was abandoned as long ago as 1918. Having finished work on the south mole of Whanganui harbour, she was left in a shed near the coast. In September 2025 she was discovered and, with support from the contractors, local authorities and other parties, was excavated and moved to the premises of Steamrail Wanganui.

E. W. Mills built three locos of this design, known as the Class A for the Foxton & Palmerston North Tramway. Whilst sister loco Opossum survives and is displayed as built as a 0-4-0 tank loco, albeit modified in many ways, Skunk was rebuilt as a geared, chain drive loco. The third loco, Wallaby was scrapped at the end of the 19th century.

The former NCB Manvers Main Colliery, Hunslet built Austerity 0-6-0ST (Works No. 3889) No. 65, has now been moved into the main workshops at Norchard on the Dean Forest Railway for its restoration to now get underway.

Work has now started on overhauling BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No. 92214, back into service again at the Great Central Railway as work on removing the brick arch in the firebox and removal of the boiler tubes is now underway.

The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway is launching an appeal to raise funds to buy the ex GKN, Eastmoors Steelworks, Hunslet built 48150 Class 0-6-0ST (Works No. 1873) No. 18 "Jessie", from its owner Mike Pearce who has given the railway to buy the locomotive for their running fleet.
