Locomotive is now operational. It has been sold by McCloud (via Martin Hansen) to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. It is expected to be moved this March, with revenue operations beginning in May. This will end over 100 years of steam at McCloud.

Quote from Jeff Moore:

#25 last ran on President's Day Weekend 2001. It is currently sitting in the back of the shop and needs some work before she can run again. There is a possibility that the railroad may elect to sell the locomotive; they had a deal to lease it to an outfit that was going to operate a part of the old Union Pacific Joseph branch in northeastern Oregon a couple years ago, but that fell through. Any deal that would take the locomotive out of McCloud will produce a major angry backlash against the railroad from the local community- so if anything like that happens it will be done very, very quietly.

"Dontated to the city of McCloud" is the latest word. McCloud Railway is up for abandonment, with planned removal of tracks east of McCloud, and the line to Mt. Shasta being relegated to an "industrial spur."

Word is the #25 has been donated to the City of McCloud.

Locomotive acquired new by the McCloud River Railroad in 1925.  It was one of six new prairie-type locomotives purchased new in 1924 and 1925 (two from Baldwin, 4 from Alco) specifically for use on the McCloud River Lumber Company logging railroad trackage.  Locomotive worked for 30 years until replaced by diesels.  The #25 was retired in 1955 and stored until re-activated for excursion service in 1963.  The locomotive worked in excursions until 1975, when it was stored again.

The #25 was restored back to service in 1982 and ran from then until 1986 in a partnership the railroad developed with the Great Western Railroad Museum.  The museum gained title to the locomotive in 1986 or 1987, but the machine remained in storage on the McCloud.

The McCloud Railway purchased the locomotive from the museum in 1995 and returned it to operation in 1997.  It operated until Feb. 2001, when 2-8-2 #18 returned to service.  The #25 has not operated since and is in storage in McCloud, in need of some boiler work before it can steam again.  At this point prospects for future operation of the locomotive do not look promising.

Currently out of service since 2002 and needing a full FRA overhaul.  Due to downturn in business this may take some time.
