This locomotive was totally derelict at Cankiri for many years, its tender separated and used for oil storage. There is an internet report dated 13/6/13 that says it was to be moved to the private Rahmi M. Koc Museum in Istanbul. The article stated the locomotive would take 2 years to restore, so if this is true it should be there by now. The article is here http://www.demiryol.net/cankirida-bulunan-eski-buharli-lokomotif-rahmi-koc-muzesinde-sergilenecek.html

CFP 0-6-0T No. E-54 (Tondella)Posted by: Dale W Fickés on Nov 20, 2018 @ 09:11:26
Visitors to the Photo Album images for this locomotive will note that the locomotive carries Emil Kessler, Esslingen Works plate No. 2193 of 1886. This does not correspond to its actual record, this being No. 2348 of 1889 which would fit with Nos. E52 and E55, also preserved in Portugal. I would suggest that the plate which the locomotive bears actually came from CP No. E85 (now scrapped). Fortunately a comparison may be made in these pages with the plate from No. E86 (Esslingen 2194) at FMNF Macinhata do Vouga museum.

Victorian Railways 4-6-0 No. D 640Posted by: Robin R Beck on Nov 19, 2018 @ 11:11:03
This is the first steam locomotive built by Thompsons Foundry, Castlemaine, Victoria. It is one of a class of 261 locos built as a Victoria Railways DD class. The class was built to operate mainline services, but found unsuitable. More powerful locomotives saw them quickly relegated to branch lines. Over the years various attempts were tried to improve their performance based on experience from the new K class. In 1929 one DD class was fitted with a larger super-heated boiler. It proved a success so 93 further locos were also altered. These locos became Victoria Railways D3 class, becoming a popular class.

640 was originally numbered DD633 when built 1914. In 1930 it was rebuilt with superheated boiler and renumbered D3 688. Renumbered to D3 640 in 1963, withdrawn in 1964 and sold to Swan Hill Folk Museum which opened in 1966 as Australia's first open air museum. It has since been renamed as Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement and is a collection of period buildings with period dressed staff. Plenty to see and well worth the visit. 640 is on display in the museum grounds. After 50 years display, in good condition.

Moreton Mill 0-6-0WT+T No. 1901 'Moreton'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Nov 12, 2018 @ 13:11:09
Ordered in 1901 and shipped to Australia. For some unknown reason the original sale never took place. The Kraus agent in Queensland put the loco in store. In 1904 it was purchased by Moreton Central Sugar Mill, Nambour, Queensland, becoming their first steam locomotive. Was named MORETON. It displaced horse power on the mill's tramways. Withdrawn in 1968 and displayed Currie Park, Nambour. During the next 20 years may have been displayed at different sites.

In 1988 the loco moved to Yandina. Here it was converted. A new tender was made. Inside the tender was a diesel engine. This drives a hydraulic pump & I presume an alternator. The locomotive was converted with a hydraulic motor fitted in the firebox/boiler space with a chain drive from the motor to one of the driving axles. So outwards looks just like a normal steam locomotive.

Is now the operating locomotive at the Yandina Ginger Factory, bearing number 1901. Running around the grounds of the theme park which is the public access part of the operating ginger factory. More a family themed park, still worth a visit. It is only 6 miles from Nambour. Where the loco originally worked

Moreton Mill 0-4-2T No. 'Eudlo'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Nov 12, 2018 @ 13:11:05
This was the second Fowler steam locomotive ordered by the Moreton Central Sugar Mill. They named it EUDLO. Worked until 1968 on the mills sugar tramways. Then used until 1975 as a stationary boiler at the mill. After failing a boiler inspection was put on display at the mill. The last working steam loco at the mill. When the mill closed in 2003. Moved to the Nambour District Historical Museum. Displayed here in excellent condition. The large exhibits at the museum are behind steel fencing or cages. This is to prevent the street artists daubing the exhibits in spray paint.

The Moreton Central Sugar Mill started crushing sugar cane in 1897. Their tramway was originally horse draw. From 1904 they started purchasing steam locomotives to work the tramway. The tramway expanded to a 70 mile network linking the sugar cane fields to the mill. From 1963 the mill started buying diesel locomotives. Strangely horses worked until 1960 moving empty wagons at the mill. The tramway ran through the main streets of Nambour to the mill. The railway tracks are still embedded in the roads. The mill closed 2003 and later the whole site cleared. Now a modern shopping mall stands in its place.

In May 2018 loco was undergoing a cosmetic repaint.

Macknade Mill 0-6-0T No. 8 'Green Hornet'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Nov 12, 2018 @ 13:11:58
New to Macknade Sugar Mill, near Ingham, Queensland. Became their number 8. After withdrawal was displayed at Lucinda Point, a small coastal town. In the 70s moved to Timbertown Heritage Park, Wauchope, NSW where it hauled passenger trains around the Park, acquiring the name GREEN HORNET. By 2000 was out of use. Around 2010 sold to a private individual. Now displayed in the carpark of the Railway Motel, Taree, NSW, a short walk from the railway station. A polite request at reception, allowed use to view the loco, plus were shown other railway artefacts.

Moreton Mill 0-4-0WT No. 'Valdora'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Nov 12, 2018 @ 13:11:05
Started life working at Racecourse Sugar Mill, Mackay, Queensland. In 1937 it was purchased by Moreton Mill, Nambour as they required a light locomotive to operate on their Valdora branch line. Was named VALDORA by Moreton Mill. Had the distinction of being the oldest loco to work at the sugar mill. After withdrawal was put on display in the town of Nambour. Now housed in the Nambour District Historical Museum. May 2018 loco was undergoing a cosmetic repaint.

Mapleton Tramway Shay - 2 truck No. 'Shay'Posted by: Robin R Beck on Nov 12, 2018 @ 13:11:48
In 1908 Moreton Central Sugar Mill purchased a Shay loco from Lima, works number 2091 and named her DULONG. It was their first locomotive to be named after a sugar growing district. It was bought to work the mills steeply graded and sharply curved line to Dulong.

In 1914 DULONG was sold along with the tramway from Nambour to Dulong to the Maroochy Shire Council who extended the line to Mapleton. Another Shay, works number 2800 was purchased by Maroochy Shire in 1914 to work along with DULONG on the 12 mile extended tramway. This new Shay loco was named MAPLETON.

The Nambour to Mapleton tramway closed in 1944. The slow speed of the trains, the change of gauge 24 to 42 inch at Nambour to the Queensland mainline railway and road vehicles taking traffic being the 3 major causes. Moreton Mill purchased the two worn out Shays and all the railway track & rolling stock..

In 1948 the two Shay locomotives from the ex Nambour to Mapleton tramway DULONG & MAPLETON were rebuilt into one loco. Work was carried out at Moreton Sugar Mill using approx 50% of the good parts from each loco. The resultant loco was named SHAY. It worked until 1960. Was then displayed at the entrance to the mill. Some time after the mill closed in 2003 SHAY moved to storage at Ipswich Workshop Museum. In 2010 SHAY was returned to Nambour, joining an expanding collection of ex Moreton Sugar Mill locomotives at the District Historical Museum where it has been cosmetically restored by volunteers.
