"Wailuki" is an incorrect spelling of the town named Wailuku which is a short distance NW of the town of Kahului.

This locomotive was initially named Kalakaua, but soon changed to her current name Leslie.

This locomotive was the first locomotive of the Hawaiian Railroad Company, chartered in 1880.  In 1963, she was repatriated to California, with a coach.  An interesting piece of trivia on this locomotive happened in 1968.  She was restored to operational status, and acted in the role as a beautiful forney, steam locomotive on the New York Elevated Railroad in the 1969 motion picture, "Hello, Dolly", with Barbara Streisand.  She is 3 years older than the Claus Spreckels, and is most likely the oldest remaining Baldwin 0-4-2T locomotive in existence.  This locomotive is a real jewel as a rare, late 19th-century locomotive!

This is NOT Claus Spreckels, Claus Spreckels never left HI, Claus Spreckels was found with completely damaged,  This leads to the conclution that this is a sister engine.

I grew up about 2 miles away from this estate, driving by it nearly every day on my way to high school. My father, knowing of my intense interest in trains, told me that his cousin helped in transporting a small steam locomotive to an orange grove in Woodland Hills sometime in the early 60's. This certainly seems to be it. I don't think this is the "Claus Spreckles," considering the different construction numbers, specifications, stack, cab, smaller smokebox, and different placement of the builder's plate. Somewhere I read that they were sister locomotives, but I am not sure about this. I still live very close by, and will investigate this soon!

If this is Kahului RR #1 "Claus Spreckles", it is back in Hawaii now.
