New Haven 2-8-2 No. 3025 (1658)Posted by: Russell Newman on Dec 30, 2018 @ 12:12:09
Valley Railroad No. 3025 formerly SY 1658m is the second Chinese built SY Class 2-8-2 that was built at Tangshan Works for American Tourist Railroad use in 1989. It came to the United States of America on the same ship with sister SY 1647m (New York, Susquehana & Western No. 142) in 1990. 1658m went to the Knox and Kane Railroad in Pennsylvania the same year and ran there till 2002 when the Knox and Kane Railroad closed following the collapse of the Kinzua Viaduct that year. In 2008 the locomotive was damaged in a roundhouse fire which was mostly cosmetic but the SY was in good running condition still. Which saw it get sold to the Valley Railroad which using spare parts from China the SY was rebuilt to look like a New Haven Railroad J1 Class 2-8-2 and given the next running number in line 3025. Today 3025 or 1658m is still going strong since it entered service there in 2012.

New York, Susquehana & Western 2-8-2 No. 142Posted by: Russell Newman on Dec 30, 2018 @ 11:12:54
Following the success of JS 8419 on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in the early 1990s onwards. Two SY Class 2-8-2s where built at the Tangshan Locomotive Works in 1989 for use on American Tourist Railroads as well in the early 1990s. Unlike the SYs in China the two sent to the U.S.A. were built to American speciations such as right hand driving. New York, Susquehana & Western No. 142 was formerly SY 1647m the m donating a American spec locomotive in Chinese was first put to work on the Valley Railroad in Connecticut in 1990. But it only ran there for 2 years before it was sold to the New York, Susquehana Railroad in 1992. The New York, Susquehana Railroad had purchased a SY 2-8-2 from China but sadly that locomotive was lost at sea when the ship carrying it sank in a Typhoon. So 1647m was bought instead and renumbered to 142 and on mainline trips with them till 2004 when the SY 2-8-2 went to the Belvidere-Delaware Railroad where it has been since.

Boone & Scenic Valley RR 2-8-2 No. 8419Posted by: Russell Newman on Dec 30, 2018 @ 11:12:19
The JS 8419 is the only Chinese JS Class 2-8-2 in the United States of America and one of a number of Chinese JS Class 2-8-2s that are still running in the world today along with a number of JS Class 2-8-2s still at work at Sandaoling in Xinjiang in North West China. JS 8419 was one of the very last JS Class 2-8-2s to be built at Datong works in 1988 which saw the end of steam locomotive construction in the world there. All though steam locomotive construction continued in China with the SY Class 2-8-2 till 1999 for use on industrial railways in China. But 8419 was the very first Chinese built steam locomotive to be built and shipped new to the United States of America for use on a American Tourist Railroad in 1989. To show friendship between China and the U.S.A. 8419 carries the Chinese and American Flags on its skyline casing round the chimney or smoke stack as its known in America. Plus a message in Chinese of friendship which is still on the tender of the locomotive today.
