I believe this one is quite mislabeled. I don’t think Jim Walsh ever owned a 24” Porter. He did, however, own a 24” Davenport. Information on the Davenport is hard to come by, but I believe it was ordered by Foley, Welch and Stewart in 1912, and was 9 tons. It never worked at Berners Bay. The locomotive was sold in 2023 and the new owner has a YouTube channel (Wrecked2Restored) and has been documenting restoration of both this locomotive and another. The photo in the album should also be removed.

FCGR (BAGS) 4-8-0 No. 1583Posted by: Steve Frost, European Editor on May 27, 2026 @ 18:05:21
This loco is a Class 15B built in 1948 by Vulcan Foundry, Newton le Willows for the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway. The complete surviving examples show the raised running plate over the cylinders and also the shape of the cut away at the bottom of the cab side sheet and the patch on the side sheet where a plaque of some sort was displayed are the same. There were 30 locos in the class and they were rebuilt in the late 1950s on the principles of the great French locomotive engineer, Andre Chapelon. I think that the equally great Argentinian locomotive engineer L D Porta would have carried this out. The result was and increase in power of up to 40% with a reduction in fuel consumption on average of 30%.

Sadly the remains of this one lie abandoned in a derelict locomotive depot.

The photo shows the rotary snowplough, but was it self propelled?

Looking at the layout of the machine, it appears to have leading and trailing trucks, but no evidence of driving wheels. Could just be the photo. However, the steam pipes from the top of the boiler lead down to horizontal cylinders above the chassis frame. Another photo shows that they drive the cutting disc through heavy duty exposed bevel gears. There appears to be no link to the wheels.

Any better information would be appreciated, especially if you have seen the Alco (Cooke) record for this interesting, if rusty, survivor.
