This locomotive has a convincing American appearance! However the boxpok wheels, tender and domes give it away.

Following the success of JS 8419 on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in the early 1990s onwards. Two SY Class 2-8-2s where built at the Tangshan Locomotive Works in 1989 for use on American Tourist Railroads as well in the early 1990s. Unlike the SYs in China the two sent to the U.S.A. were built to American speciations such as right hand driving. New York, Susquehana & Western No. 142 was formerly SY 1647m the m donating a American spec locomotive in Chinese was first put to work on the Valley Railroad in Connecticut in 1990. But it only ran there for 2 years before it was sold to the New York, Susquehana Railroad in 1992. The New York, Susquehana Railroad had purchased a SY 2-8-2 from China but sadly that locomotive was lost at sea when the ship carrying it sank in a Typhoon. So 1647m was bought instead and renumbered to 142 and on mainline trips with them till 2004 when the SY 2-8-2 went to the Belvidere-Delaware Railroad where it has been since.

As of Sunday, 10-15-17, 142 is out of service. It is currently unknown what will happen as the Bel-Del has had financial strains as of recent and would cause more financial issues if they were to immediately carry out the 1472 Day inspection. There have been rumors, though are as of right now yet to be confirmed that the Bel-Del may have to sell 142 off.

This engine was built in 1989 at the Tang Shan Locomotive Works in China for the Valley Railroad in Essex, Connecticut.  It ran there in 1990 & 1991 as number 1647. The Susquehanna Railroad purchased an identical locomotive from Tang Shan in 1991, but the ship carrying it sank in the Bay of Bengal.  In 1992 the Susquehanna bought the 1647 from the Valley, and renumberd it 142.  The 142 ran on the Susquehanna for a while but now runs on a tourist railroad.  While the 142 is less than twenty years old, it's still a great steam locomotive.

Built as #1647 for Connecticut Valley Railroad, Essex, CT by Tangshan in 1989.  Sister engine is located at Knox & Kane Railroad in Pennsylvania.  Ran at Essex until around 1991, when the ship carrying Susquehanna's own Mikado sank 6,000 feet into the Bay of Bengal, prompting the sale of #1647 to Susquehanna where it became #142.  Valley RR has a 2-8-0 from Birmingham & Southeastern and a 2-8-2 from the Aberdeen & Rockfish.
