Just saw a report from Trains magazine that the North Carolina Transportation Museum has reached an agreement with the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley to return this locomotive to West Virginia

The Locomotive according to one unknown resource is no longer in Spencer. It has been taken to WV where it will be repaired and restored along with the tender. It will operate again once the money and repairs are raised and completed.

Discussions have been made about her future. If the #604 returns to service, it is likely that she will be painted freight black as Buffalo Creek & Gauley #4. However, the #604 is strewn in pieces all around the NCTM.

Currently, the BC&G #4 is out of service. Due to lack of funds, especially from the state of North Carolina, it is unlikely that she will ever return to steam again.

As of August 2004, the investigatory work on the boiler is complete and a scope of work is being prepared to rework the boiler. Hopefully, if enough money can be raised and a qualified contractor can be found, some initial work will take place in 2005.

As for the cost and timeframe, it is difficult to say but the best guesses are in the $300,000 range and 4-5 years for completion.

The engine's home base is Spencer and that is listed on the side of the cab in the same way the SR listed the division assigned to steam engines.

Spencer 604 will be repainted as Buffalo Creek #4 once restoration is complete. At least $500K is needed for Engine #4 to be on her way to returning steam to the Museum.

I made a mistake. The pictures are of Southern 542 painted as 604 for the movie Leatherheads. Could the pictures please be moved to SRR 542's gallery?

#4 is still being worked on but they said it would be about another 4 years before it could run again. When I was there last it wasn't in the restoration shop but in with the other equippment. The cab was stripped of everything but it sure looked good.

As Far as I know this locomotive was renumbered to 604 and it is named Spencer.  The locomotive is at the present time in the paint shop but work still continues to the restoration of this locomotive.  $125K was spent in the restoration funds for this locomotive and they need $275K for the complete restoration.  The locomotive will hopefully return to service in 2006.
