She is NOT operating for now. Status should be overhaul, as it is undergoing its 15 year rebuild. 2012 or 2013 it will operate again

The whistle of the #1225 is a Lima Locomotive works 5-chime, just like the original whistle of the #765

Most of what Brandy posted is correct, just one small error. The shops in Owosso, MI are NOT PM shops. This was the site of the old Ann Arbor shops. Thanks for running a great site Doug. (I still what to know when your book will be out)

The Pere Marquette 1225 was built in 1941 by Lima for fast freight service. It was retired in 1951 and put on display at Michigan State University where a group began restoration in 1970. After moving to the old PM steam backshop at Owosso, Michigan in the middle 1980's the work was finished in 1988. The 1225 pulled several short excursions during the next few years in Michigan. The highlight of 1225's excursion career came in 1991 when it operated at the 1991 N.R.H.S. convention in Huntington, West Virginia. It pulled 31 passenger cars at speed running right beside Nickel Plate 765 and doubleheaded with it as well. 1225 was the Prototype in the animated movie "Polar Express". It has been pulling many excursions in Michigan during the last few years, and is planned to pull some this year. Hopefully, 1225 will steam for many more years thanks to the people at the Steam Railroading Institute. It is a great coal burning locomotive.

all the sounds the locomotive makes in the movie THE POLAR EXPRESS were made by 1225 and recorded north of Owosso Michigan. that includes its whistle.

There is an error in the cylinder size it should be 26x34 not 26x24 as posted..... check the 1941 Lima Construction Number 7837 for Pere Marquette No. 1223 (from my copy of the Lima Construction List, Bulletin 123) Thanks....

Errr...in some video clips of 1225, the whistle sounded like Milwaukee Road 261's "guest whistle."

In "The Polar Express", the movie Berk's whistle sounded like Royal Hudson #2860's CPR Air Whistle. If you listen very closely you can hear that distinctive pitch of the air whistle.

As for the #1225's whistle, it's possibly a 6-chime whistle.

See Ya Later!

When i saw the trailer for polar express, i knew it was a Berkshire, and it's 1225. It's the only operating Berkshire, due to 765's restoration.

Engine is operational schedule for 2004 AUG. 14&15.

Engine may be traveling to Grand Rapids Michigan for the opening of the movie 'Polar Express'.  Details are still being worked out with CSX who owns the rail that they will travel on.  From last I heard sometime in November 2004.
