I worked at Astroworld in 1979. I used to ride at the very back of this train telling everyone. "Hey,Hey,Hey,Howdy Howdy Howdy. Here we are aboard the Big 610 Limited and the reason we call this here train the Big 610 Limited is because we have 610 rules and regulations aboard this here train." Lots of jokes ect. ect. ect. I did that so many times I could still do it and remember all of the jokes that I would spiel nonstop during the ride That was a great time. I also did tours on the "River of no Return"

I worked as an engineer on this engine from 1972 - 1974. Many, many hours going around Astroworld in it. I would load a photo but I am not sure houw.

I have no idea who this Mr. Emerson is but his information is grossly inaccurate. #1 is currently in service on the Pacific Coast Railroad at the Santa Margarita Ranch and remains oil fired (more specifically, No. 2 diesel) There are no plans for reboilering nor a conversion to propane firing. Six Flags Astroworld has been sold and will be demolished to make way for redevelopment. The fate of this locomotive is unknown at best. As far as I know it is operable and could be moved to another park.

Gauge is 36", status is operable, at least as far as I know. Management of this park is apparently somewhat reluctant to let steam go and last I heard had a crew come up from the Austin Steam Train Association to put a fire in the remaining of the two Harpurs on select Sundays during the operating season.

Sorry, forgot to add that it is 36" gauge, not 30".

According to rumor in the amusement park railroad community, the remaining Hapur at Astroworld is still operational as the current manager of the park wants to retain it for special occaisons. Though the park no longer has a steam crew, some volunteers from a railroad museum in Austin come to the park every other Sunday to run it for the public. Other days the train is powered by "Elizabeth", a diesel locomotive very nicely disguised as a 2-4-0 steamer.

Astroworld received a GE 40ton switch engine, as well as coaches from Six Flags Magic Mountain when that park shut down their railroad. The GE and the 610 Limited (Harpur) were used during the summer peak season. During mid-September to the end of the season, only one engine, the GE was used. I understand that they have recived a second diesel, "The Elizabeth" (a steam outline) and now use her regularly. The 610 is parked in the enginehouse and her fate is unknown at this time.

Last I heard, Astroworld has purchased two diesel locomotives for their railroad.  The remaining Harpur 4-4-0 is still operational, but comes out only on special occasions.
