This is another of the ubiquitous Hunslet 18" cylinder saddle tank that has been so successful in the UK since its introduction during the Second World War. This one was supplied new to the National Coal Board and was used at the Dawdon mine near Seaham, lasting until July 1976 before withdrawal and sale to the Strathspey line.

Notice that on this example the cab profile has been altered and reduced in width, as has the upper part of the bunker. This rounded top can be seen on other ex-Lambton locos like Lambton Hetton & Joicey Collieries No.5 at Grosmont.

The modification was so that they could pass through the tunnel to reach the Lambton coal staiths by the River Wear at Sunderland. The tunnel was very low and narrow, and as the staiths were a loading point for coal exported from the Lambton pits, locomotive access was important.
