This is the history of ex Airservice Construction Corps, Andrew Barclay built 0-4-0WT No. 6 "Douglas". Built in 1918 by Andrew Barclay & Co. Ltd. in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in Scotland, for the Airservice Construction Corps. From 1921 until 1945 it worked at the RAF railway at Calshot Spit, Southampton. After a period in store at Calshot it was bought in 1949 by Abelson & Co. (Engineers) Ltd. who presented it to the Talyllyn in 1953. After overhaul and alteration from 2ft to 2ft 3in gauge, it entered service in 1954 and was named ‘Douglas’ at the donor’s request. Although smaller than the other locos it has performed well and was returned to service in 1995, having been fitted with a new boiler and turned out in its old Air Ministry Works & Buildings livery. On 21st February 2018, it was the 100th Birthday of ‘Douglas’. To commemorate the centenary a new livery reflecting its RAF heritage was commissioned. No. 6 was the inspiration for the famous Thomas the Tank Engine character "Duncan", in the Thomas the Tank Engine books by the Rev. W. Awdry, who was known to Rock and Roll.

The ex Airservice Construction Corps, Andrew Barclay built 0-4-0WT No. 6 "Douglas", has now been withdrawn from service following the end of its boiler ticket. "Douglas" will be out of traffic for two years, the first of which will be spent in dry storage in order to help resolve a conflict of 10-year boiler examinations which currently exists across the locomotive fleet at the Talyllyn Railway, before a full overhaul can begin.

This year marks No. 6 "Douglas" s 100th birthday. No.6 started life working at the then Admiralty Aerodrome at Manston in Kent where it was delivered new from the manufacturers Andrew Barclay in February 1918. It was used by the Admiralty Air Service Construction Corps and was then inherited by the new RAF later that year. Which this year also marks 100 years of the RAF and to mark this the locomotive is to be repainted in to its RAF livery for the 2018 season.
