Was used during the Second World War by the army. They armour plated it, and two ex-Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway mineral hoppers, and armed the hoppers with Lewis guns and anti-tank rifles, creating the only 15" gauge armoured train ever. It never actually shot anything but apparently caused the crash of a German plane that saw the small train and thought they were flying too high.

'Hercules' was involved in a collision with a car on an ungated crossing in August 2003. The crossing was working properly, and the car failed to give way to the train. The impact derailed the loco, throwing it onto its side and trapping the driver in the cab. Sadly, the loco driver died as a result of his injuries. Despite some carriages being derailed, no passengers were hurt, and despite extensive damage to the driver's side of the car, the occupants of the car survived, too. The loco is not a write off, but has been extensively damaged, so is unlikely to run again in the near future.
