The second tender from ex LNER A4 Pacific No. 4464 "Bittern" which was formerly used by No. 4472 (60103) "Flying Scotsman" during the late 1960s to the 1970s is being returned for use on the mainline again for use with sister LNER A4 Pacific No. 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" and LNER A2 Pacific No. 60532 "Blue Peter" and "Bittern" again as part of improvedments for the increase range for mainline steam running on the National Network for Locomotive Services Ltd. The second tender is currently at LNWR Heritage at Crewe where it is undergoing re-engineering work which is ongoing as it has a history of poor ride quality, while its buckeye coupler is being replaced with a shackle coupler. The plan is to have the second tender ready for No. 60532 "Blue Peter" in 2024, but if completed sooner it will be tested with No. 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley".

"London & North Eastern Railway A4 NO. 4464 Bittern Had A Speed of 90 MPH!"
Posted: Jun 30, 2013 @ 12:06:40 by Steve Frost
The present primary photo by Phil Horton shows 'Bittern' on the first passenger carrying run after it was approved to run at 90mph. Running well at Tallington on June 29th 2013 with the whistle blowing, Phil estimated that it was doing 80mph at least.

Later the top speed was announced at 92.8mph. Not bad for a loco built in 1937. In fact the photo gives a good idea of what the sight would have been like back then, as the loco is restored to 1930's appearance. OK, you purists will point out the obvious things like the overhead electrification wires, the continuously welded rail and the British Railways carriages.

Nevertheless it is a great sight and a tribute to those behind the effort to have the loco permitted to do what it was built to do.

Currently the loco has been returned to its pre-war appearance with full valences over the driving wheels and Garter Blue paint. It is running as the long scrapped No 4492 'Dominion of New Zealand'.

After some teething problems following the loco's recent comprehensive overhaul at the Mid Hants Railway, the loco should now be available for main line running. I noted it at the National Railway Museum, York on 5th December 2007 so it had probably worked in on a railtour the previous week.
