The ex British Leyland and former Steel Company of Wales Bagnall built 0-6-0ST No. 401 (Works No. 2994) "Vulcan", has been taken out of service for an intermediate overhaul that should see it with a fresh 10-year boiler ticket.

After a good season touring other preserved railways this year, the ex British Leyland and former Steel Company of Wales Bagnall built 0-6-0ST No. 401 (Works No. 2994) "Vulcan" has returned to the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway where it is on long term loan to them, where it has been a fantastic showcase for both them and its owners the North Tyneside Railway.

After its visit to the Severn Valley Railway in September, ex British Leyland and former Steel Company of Wales Bagnall built 0-6-0ST No. 401 (Works No. 2994) "Vulcan" will then visit the Dean Forest Railway for their South Wales-themed Royal Forest of Steam Gala weekend on the 14th and 15th of October 2023.

The ex British Leyland and former Steel Company of Wales Bagnall built 0-6-0ST No. 401 (Works No. 2994) "Vulcan" will visit the Severn Valley Railway for the first time as their second visiting locomotive at their Autumn Steam Gala on the 14th and 17th September 2023. It will also be the first time that a Bagnall built steam locomotive has ever worked along the Severn Valley line then too.

The Bagnall built 0-6-0ST No. 401 is being repainted back to her original Steel Company of Wales Ltd maroon livery for the 2020 season onwards.

The ex British Leyland and former Steel Company of Wales Bagnall built 0-6-0ST No. 401 "Thomas Burt" formerly known as "Vulcan" which is the most high-tech steam shunting locomotive ever built was steamed for the first time in over a decade on January 17th 2019. The locomotive will enter service this Easter or possible earlier.

The boiler is back in the frames and reassembly of the loco is progressing with a return to operation expected soon.

Currently not in use, awaiting a boiler lift to repair some firebox stays. A new welded boiler may be an option.

This is an interesting example of the last word in UK industrial steam, although not the last to be built by a long way. It featured improvements over earlier types, aimed at making maintenance easier, like outside cylinders and valve gear, roller bearings throughout (including the valve gear, coupling rods, big ends, etc) and a rocking grate to make ash disposal easier, too. Compare it with the Hunslet 18 inch 'Austerity' types that are much more numerous and of later build in some cases to see the difference.
