What I did mean if I added more words to it was that No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn" will be the first standard gauge tender steam locomotive in the UK, in preservation to be oil fired when it returns from overhaul, sorry.

Jack is quite right, Indeed The Great Eastern had fifty or more locos oil fired from 1893, and the Great Northern used oil firing on some locos during a coal miners strike in 1921. The LMS also fitted locos for oil firing during the 1926 strike and in the immediate post war period the GWR also fitted twenty of their 2-8-0 freight locos for oil firing. They also converted some Castle class and Hall class locos but all returned to coal fuel by 1950. A solitary GWR pannier tank loco, No. 3711 was converted to oil fuel in 1958 and ran with this until it was withdrawn in 1963.

Russell, you are incorrect in your statement that 3672 is the first standard gauge engine in the UK to burn oil. 118 Brussels is oil fired, and that ran on the KWVR in the 1970s.

It has been confirmed by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, that ex War Department (Dub-Dee) Austerity 2-10-0 No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn" will be the first standard gauge steam locomotive in the UK to be oil fired when it returns from overhaul. As No. 3672 will run on liquid fuel that can take a number of forms, including heavy oil to recycled cooking oil. The main driving factor behind using liquid fuels rather than solid fuels, such as coal, is the ability to maintain a steam locomotive during hot weather periods during the summer months, and the accompanying fire risks related to this. WD locomotives, like 3672 Dame Vera Lynn, were designed to be used using coal firing or oil burning, and there is evidence that 3672 was originally built as an oil fired variant of the Class in service. No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn" is expected to be moved into the fitting shop at Grosmont MPD once the overhaul on ex LMS Black Five No. 44806 is completed soon.

Having read your note, Saul, it would be an idea to address your ideas to the owners, unless you are in a position to finance a "new build" loco yourself. We understand that the loco will go into the Grosmont works when other projects are completed. The finance is still needed and the "Dame Vera Lynn" group are keen to receive any contributions towards that end.

The overhaul on the tender of ex War Department (Dub-Dee) Austerity 2-10-0 No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn" is now complete as the chassis are overhauled and repaired and the brand new tender tank fabricated by Riley and Sons Engineering has been fitted.

Plans are underway to have ex War Department (Dub-Dee) Austerity 2-10-0 No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn" converted to oil-firing during her current overhaul following a deal between the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and American based FMW Solutions which has already developed oil-firing for steam locomotives in its domestic market. The converstion to oil-firing on No. 3672 will help reduce fire-risk steam bans on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway during the dry summer months. Its not the first time that No. 3672 and her sister WD 2-10-0 locomotives have been oil-fired as they burnt oil while working out in Greece.

This is the history of War Department Austerity 2-10-0 No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn". It was built in 1944 from the designs of Robin Riddles in Glasgow, Scotland by the North British Locomotive Company during the dark days of the Second World War as one of 150 WD 2-10-0 locomotives for use by the British Army at home and abroad. No. 3672 was within a few months of being completed when it was renumbered as WD No. 73672 and shipped out to Egypt where it worked for two years before being declared surplus at the end of the war.

The locomotive went to Greece as it was sold for further use on the Hellenic State Railways there and carried the Hellenic State Railways number No. ?ß960. She was shedded along with many other WD 2-10-0 locomotives at Thessaloniki depot and worked in Greece until she was was withdrawn from service in 1979. The locomotive was bought for preservation by a consortium from the Mid Hants Railway in 1984 and was repatriated back to the UK along with sister WD 2-10-0 No. 3652 (Then ?ß951 now No. 90775 which is today at the North Norfolk Railway) and United States Army Transportation Corps. S160 Class 2-8-0 No. 3278 (Which is today at the Churnet Valley Railway).

When she returned to the UK No. 3672 was sold on to the Lavender Line where it arrived in 1984. There she underwent restoration to running order. The owners there decided due to its wartime credentials and the fact that Dame Vera Lynn was still about, that the locomotive should be named in her honour. So on August the 6th, 1985 the singer named the engine after herself. In 1986 the locomotive was sold again to Mr Clifford Brown a British-based businessman and managing director of a steel company in Virginia in the United States of America. No. 3672 was then moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and entered service there in April 1989 and ran over 100.000 miles before it was withdrawn for its overhaul.

No. 3672 had been in storage at Grosmont shed for the last 20 years awaiting the time, money and facilities required for its overhaul and restoration which is now underway. Now under the ownership of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway the total raised so far thanks to the generosity of the general public stands at £175.000. Another £450,000 is still required to fully fund the overhaul of the locomotive. By May of 2021 the £175.000 of the £600.000 appeal to get No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn" in steam again had been received. The funds available so far has allowed work on the tender to start at Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. at Heywood. It is hoped that the overhaul of the locomotive will be completed by 2024 or 2025.

The tender of former War Department Austerity 2-10-0 No. 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn" is to be sent away for overhaul and to have a brand new tender tank fitted. While work on the locomotive is progressing at a slow pace but it is hoped that a space in the workshop at Grosmont will be free soon for No. 3672 to be moved in for work to pick up.

UK wartime 'Austerity' loco. Large numbers built and widely used in UK and Europe in the later war years and up to the late 1960's. In the UK some were bought by British Railways, but all were scrapped. This one was used in Greece and the air pump is retained (removed in UK operated examples as most railways in the UK used vacuum brakes until the 1970's) The photo was taken at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Currently awaiting overhaul.
