The ex Southern Railway, Bulleid Battle of Britain Class Light Pacific No. 34067 "Tangmere", has had to be taken out of service following damage to its left side cylinder and severing the piston rod while on a run over the Settle and Carlisle line in September 2024. No. 34067 is now under repairs at West Coast Railway Company’s depot at Carnforth where she could be fitted with a replacement cylinder from Class mate No. 34073 "249 Squadron" (aka No. 34054 "Lord Beaverbrook").

For its upcoming trip over the Settle and Carlisle Railway with Pathfinder Railtours on the 24th February 2024, ex Southern Railway, Bulleid Battle of Britain Class Light Pacific No. 34067 "Tangmere", will be re-creating the early years of mainline steam preservation in the 1980s and early 1990s done by sister Bulleid West Country Class Light Pacific No. 34092 "City of Wells", by hauling a set of Blue and Grey livery coaches, from Riviera Trains. As well as a good oppertunity to re-live the early years of mainline steam preservation in the UK, the other reason for this is due to West Coast Railways own stock not meeting the required Central Door Locking system that all mainline railtour carrages all now need to be fitted with to continue running on Network Rail.

The valve gear has been repaired using parts from unrestored 'Battle of Britain' class No 34073 '249 squadron'. It seems that it was the combination lever from one of the three sets of valve gear that had caused the failure. The loco is now back on the main line. Luckily there were many Bulleid pacifics in the Barry scrapyard, so there were spares available from the unrestored class member.

This loco has suffered a serious failure recently. Whilst travelling up the West Coast main line near Rugby, something came adrift in the valve gear. On these locos the valve gear is enclosed in an oil bath between the frames, the idea being to ease maintenance when it comes to oiling up. Rather like a car, you topped up the oil level. However, one problem that was not unknown during the normal operating life of these locos was for things to go wrong inside the oil bath, and this is what has happened here. The loco's exhaust beat changed, and a part of the valve gear punched a hole in the sump, so the oil was lost. The loco has been returned to Bury by road for investigation and possible repair with parts from an unrestored class member.
