This is the history of the Yugoslavian built pirate copy Class 62 USA 0-6-0T No. 30075 (JZ 62.669). During the Second World War the United States of America introduced the S100 Class 0-6-0T for the United States Army Transportation Corps in 1942 to 1943 from the American Steam Locomotives works of Vulcan Ironworks, Davenport and H K Porter. for use out in Europe and other parts of the world during the 1940s. Over 400 S100 Class USA 0-6-0T’s that were sent out to Europe during and after the second world war working in the UK, France, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. After the second world war ended many of the S100 Class USA 0-6-0T’s were sold for use out in Europe, in the UK 14 S100 Class USA 0-6-0T’s were sold to the Southern Railway for use at Southampton Docks and for shunting dutys on other parts of the Southern and later British Railways which their BR running numbers where from 30061 to 30074 and Departmental Stock numbers DS233 to DS238 where they worked unitl the end of steam on the Southern in 1967 and some were even sold for use with the National Coal Board in the Northeast of the UK. In Europe Class USA 0-6-0T’s were sold for use with many mainline railway companys and for Industrial use which in the former Yugoslavia they were very successful and popular that the Yugoslavian Railways built there own version of the S100 known as Class 62 USA 0-6-0T at the Duro Dakovic Industrija Lokomotiva works in Croatia which 90 where built from 1952 and 1961. The Yugoslavian built pirate copy Class 62 USA 0-6-0T was different to the S100 as it was slightly more powerful and had frame plates then bar frames like their S100 cousins. Some of the Yugoslavian built pirate copy Class 62 USA 0-6-0T’s are still at work today out in the coal fields of Bosnia. No. 30075 formerly JZ 62.669 was built in 1960 at the Duro Dakovic Industrija Lokomotiva works in Croatia for Industrial use at the Store Steelworks near Ljubljana in Slovenia. It worked there until 1990 when it was bought for preservation in the UK by a group of members from the Swanage Railway in Dorset who formed Project 62 to own the locomotive and later its sister No. 30076 (62.521). JZ 62.669 arrived at the Swanage Railway in 1990 where it was overhauled and modified and altered to fit with in the British loading gauge and made near to look like one of the Southern Railway USA 0-6-0T’s carrying the next British Railways running number in line 30075. No. 30075 ran at the Swanage Railway during the 1990s and has visited the Bristol Harbour Railway and the Bodmin & Wenford Railway during that time. It was withdrawn from service in 1998 following a major steam pipe failure. In 2002 No. 30075 was relocated to the East Somerset Railway where it was returned to traffic in 2004 and operated there for a short while before relocating to the Mid Hants Railway in 2009. In the winter of 2010 No. 30075 visited the Churnet Valley Railway for their then Winter Steam Gala in late January and early February that year as well as a visit to the then Dartmoor Railway in August that year. Following the failure of three old patches to the platework in the inner firebox No. 30075 was withdrawn from service and was relocated to Barrow Hill Roundhouse for display for a short while before moving to the Nottingham Heritage Railway (Great Central Railway (Nottingham) as it was known then) for storage until 2017 when No. 30075 moved to its new home at the North Dorset Railway Trust at the old Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway station at Shillingstone in North Dorset where it is now based and soon to steam again soon.

As most people know 30075 never worked in the UK or was it built in the USA for the USATC. During and after the Second World War up to 400 of the S100 Class USA Tank locos where sent all across Europe to country s like France, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. 14 of them were sold to the UK for use on the Southern Railway for shunting at Southampton Docks. Out in Yugoslavia they were very successful that the Yugoslavian Railways built there own version of them known as Class 62. The Yugoslavian Class 62 USA Tanks where built from the 1950s till the 1960s with some being built in to the early 1970s. They were built for use on industrial railways and shunting yards out there and some are still in service out in country s like Bosnia and Serbia. No. 30075 formerly JZ 62.669 was built in 1960 by Duro Dakovic Industrija Lokomotiva in Croatia where the Class 62 USA Tanks were built and worked at the Store Steelworks near Ljubljana in Slovenia. It worked there till 1990 when Project 62 bought the locomotive and shipped it to the UK. It was first based at the Swanage Railway where it was given the next BR running number 30075. The loco has been based at the East Somerset Railway and the Mid Hants Railway for a few years and today is now based at Shillingstone in Dorset and is a very popular visiting other heritage railways for spot hire and Gala weekends.

It should be pointed out for the sake of accuracy that no Yugoslavian built locos ever ran in the UK in normal operation. US built locos were bought from the US Army Transportation Corps by the Southern Railway as dock shunters at Southampton after World War 2.

These were numbered in the 30061 to 30074 range by British Railways after 1948. Some of the genuine ex BR locos are preserved. This one takes the next number in the sequence as 30075 which is a number that it could never have carried in the normal way of things, but sits well with its British Railways paint job.
